Jump while you still have the strength
"Take a leap while you still have the strength”.
The boiling frog syndrome is a metaphor for a frog placed in boiling water, which would immediately jump out to safety. But if the frog is placed in cold water and the heat gradually increases, it may not perceive the danger until it's too late, eventually succumbing to the boiling water.
The Boiling Frog Syndrome is a concept that highlights the importance of recognizing and addressing mental health concerns and self-care practices before they become critical.
Similar to the frog's unawareness of the slowly rising temperature, individuals may not always notice the gradual decline in their mental well-being until it becomes overwhelming. This can be attributed to stress, personal issues, or societal pressures.
Recognizing the signs of declining mental health, cultivating self-awareness, and seeking support when necessary are essential steps in preventing mental health issues from reaching a boiling point.

Here are three practical questions to assess if you might be experiencing the "boiling frog" syndrome:
1. Have you observed any gradual changes in your mood, behavior, or thought patterns that could suggest a decline in your mental well-being?
2. Do you make a habit of regularly checking in with yourself to evaluate your mental well-being, or do you tend to only address it when faced with a crisis or significant event?
3. Are you actively engaging in self-care practices and implementing strategies to support your mental health, or are you neglecting these activities in favor of other priorities?
Recognizing the signs of declining mental health, cultivating self-awareness, and seeking support when necessary are essential steps in preventing mental health issues from reaching a boiling point.
Engaging in regular self-care activities, such as healthy coping mechanisms, maintaining social connections, prioritizing adequate sleep and nutrition, and seeking professional help when needed, can help you maintain your mental well-being and prevent the boiling frog syndrome from taking hold in your life.

Leadership Coach, Author 'The Emotional Overdraft' & Non Executive Director in people based businesses
8moThis is very sound advice Cristina Baluta. Could I add another way to monitor if you are drawing too hard on your reservers of resilience? Track your emotional overdraft. I've shared a free template at www.emotionaloverdraft.com. You run up an emotional overdraft when you subsidise the success of your business at the cost of your own mental or physical wellness (it's a big subject - I've written a book about it). But long story short, it leads to stress, burnout, overwhelm and worse. So I recommend doing a simple daily exercise where you just track if your EO has gone up, gone down or stayed the same. I'd love to hear what you think.
