Was Jung a Systems Thinker? Masculine, Feminine and Polarity

“We are drowning in information, while starving for wisdom. The world henceforth will be run by synthesizers, people able to put together the right information at the right time, think critically about it, and make important choices wisely.”

— E.O. Wilson

This week, a coaching client asked me to elaborate on the concept of taking action from masculine energy versus feminine energy and to share my thoughts on it. I gasped for a moment, reflecting on my own insufficiency to provide a proper and actionable answer to such a question.

I've contemplated this topic extensively, recognizing its layered and nuanced nature, particularly amidst the confusing influx of New Age teachings, gender and transgender discussions, feminist ideologies, and the suffocating political correctness. In this article, I aim to articulate my thoughts in a structured manner.

As I write this article I’m also in the process of creating and structuring an online course on Systems Thinking and Innovation and, as I progress in finding my way to create exercises that will maximize the learning potential of my students, — and being a never ending student of jungian psychology myself — I can’t help but notice a striking parallel between some of Jung’s teachings and the foundations of systemic thinking.

The psyche iceberg model, originally coined by Freud, serves as a fundamental concept in psychology, illustrating the layers of the human mind: the conscious, the personal unconscious, and the collective unconscious. Jung further developed this model, utilizing it to visualize the complex workings of the psyche.

Similarly, the iceberg model finds application in systems thinking, where it serves to represent various layers of behavior within complex systems. These layers range from the surface level, encompassing observable events, to deeper levels such as underlying patterns, structures, and mental models.

By organizing these elements from most to least visible or conscious, the iceberg model provides a comprehensive framework for understanding both psychological phenomena and systemic behavior.

There are multiple interpretations of Jung's model of the psyche. The one presented here is simplified for clarity, omitting concepts like the shadow and archetypes.

BETWEEN SYSTEMS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PHENOMENA

"A system is an interconnected set of elements that is coherently organized in a way that achieves something (function or purpose)." — Donealla Meadows

This sentence brilliantly summarizes what a system generally is, how it functions broadly, and why it exists. Examples of complex systems can include the human body, the psyche, the financial market, the coral reef, a forest, or a company.

As a creative exercise, let’s consider some basic elements of systems thinking and draw parallels to the human psyche.

Interconnectedness

Within a system, all elements are interconnected, with parts and subsystems constantly interacting. Multiple cause-and-effect relationships exist between these elements, and the actions of one can impact others in various ways, potentially affecting the entire system.

Synthesis

Synthesis involves understanding how the system's different parts can work together to function as a connected, singular system. The success of the entire system can depend on the synthetic interaction of its elements. System synthesis is about observing a system to determine not just how its elements interconnect, but how they complement each other to achieve a desirable result.

Emergence

Emergence arises as a result of the synthesis of the system's elements. The interactions within the system can lead to non-linear outcomes that may be challenging to predict solely by examining its individual components. Understanding system synthesis can aid in improving the system's overall functioning.

Those who have delved into themselves, will likely recognize similar dynamics among internal parts that interconnect and serve various roles such as protection, control, support, and antagonism, all contributing to the aliveness of the psyche and the production of psychic energy.

That is why at the same time we may desire something, know that something else would be more adequate, create a compromise to perhaps have it later, and decide that making compromises makes us temporarily miserable. Amidst the internal tensions, multiple dimensions coexist simultaneously, creating an choir of voices within the psyche, each advocating for a different course of action.

Similar to emergence in broader systems, emergent behaviors in humans may manifest as a result of prolonged patterns. For instance, repeated exposure to traumatic contexts may culminate in post-traumatic stress disorder, with panic attacks seemingly arising "out of the blue." Suppressed emotions or memories may resurface unexpectedly, triggering intense emotional reactions or behavioral patterns seemingly disconnected from present circumstances.

These emergent phenomena highlight the complex interplay of psychological elements within the psyche.

Similarly, emergent events can occur within larger systems, such as forests, where seemingly disparate factors converge to produce unexpected outcomes. In a forest ecosystem, a sudden disturbance, such as a lightning strike or a fallen tree, can trigger a cascade of emergent phenomena. This disturbance may lead to changes in soil composition, altering nutrient availability and influencing the growth patterns of various plant species.

MASCULINE AND FEMININE INTERPLAY

OK, so hopefully this makes sense so far. Now it gets trickier.

Consider the myriad parts that inhabit your inner world. Think about all the subsystems that co-create the entirety of what you are — a multitude of elements, perspectives, memories, impressions, people, behaviours and ideas.

Now zoom out and reflect on the evolutionary journey spanning millennia, historical events shaping societies, systemic archetypes guiding collective behaviors, and societal dynamics mirroring individual complexities.

Think about all the conflicts we have seen between nations and the collaboration we have achieved as a species; consider the emergence of global pandemics reshaping societal norms. Consider the perpetual pendular movement between order and chaos and how those same dynamics apply to your own personal journey.

Jung said that every man has an internal feminine aspect of his unconscious — the anima — and that every woman had an internal masculine component of her unconscious — the animus.

To simplify our exploration and transcend traditional gender associations, let's examine distinct modes of operation and existence: focused consciousness and diffuse awareness.

FOCUSED CONSCIOUSNESS

Focused consciousness involves a concentrated and directed attention towards a specific task, object, or goal. It is characterized by a narrow scope of awareness, where the individual channels their mental energy towards a singular point of focus, often excluding peripheral stimuli.

Focused consciousness may be associated with masculine energy, as it aligns with qualities traditionally attributed to the masculine archetype, such as assertiveness, decisiveness, and linear thinking. It emphasizes precision, clarity, and goal-oriented action. Let's call it order.

DIFFUSE AWARENESS

Diffuse awareness, on the other hand, involves a relaxed and open-ended state of awareness that encompasses a broad spectrum of stimuli and information. It is characterized by a more expansive and inclusive perception, where the individual maintains a flexible and receptive mindset.

In this mode, individuals exhibit a heightened sensitivity to subtle cues, patterns, and connections within their environment. They may engage in creative exploration, holistic thinking, and intuitive processing, allowing ideas to flow freely and associations to emerge organically.

Diffuse awareness may be associated with feminine energy, as it embodies qualities traditionally associated with the feminine archetype, such as receptivity and intuition. It emphasizes empathy, interconnectedness, and holistic understanding, a sense of harmony and wholeness. Let's call it chaos.

With an understanding of the contrasting dynamics of order and chaos from both masculine and feminine energy (not gender!) perspectives, and returning to our systemic comprehension of reality, we can now delve into the concept of polarity.

POLARITY & PARADOX

Jung believed that all humans possess certain specific patterns of behavior and perception, which he viewed as polarities. A polarity is the relationship between two elements that are on opposite ends of a spectrum with neither element, or in this case pattern of behavior and perception, being right or wrong.

Jung did not perceive either masculinity or femininity as the "superior" side of the gender coin; rather, he viewed them as complementary aspects of the psyche. He likened them to two halves of a whole, much like light and shadow, each playing a vital role in achieving balance.

In the external world, polarity or paradox arises when opposing forces within a system tug against each other to maintain equilibrium. Polarities abound in our complex world.

In business, examples include centralization versus decentralization or stability versus change. In personal life, consider work-life balance, realism versus idealism, or conservative versus liberal viewpoints.

A natural tension exists between the two that will always be there — it’s an attribute of the system. But we humans are often uncomfortable with that tension. In fact, it unsettles us to the extent that we perceive it as a problem.

Now back to my client’s question.

How does one discern whether they are acting from masculine or feminine energy?

In each moment, one can tune in and check:

  • How am I influencing the reality I perceive?
  • What is presently required of me?
  • Is there a dialogue among my internal parts to achieve internal coherence?
  • How does the world influence me, and how do I reciprocate?
  • How can I reconcile the inherent paradoxes in all situations, recognizing that some circumstances may invite me towards the extremes of the spectrum?

An integrated human being, particularly an exceptional leader, navigates between polarities with grace, synthesizing both modes of being while acknowledging the inherent paradox that failure is inevitable to some extent. That is the human predicament — that we will fail continuously on our journey toward wholeness, embracing increasing levels of paradox as we develop and mature.

When your personal system achieves equilibrium through the interconnectedness of its parts, synthesizing their activities towards a shared objective and generating emergent behaviors, you may effectively harmonize between masculine and feminine energies, maximizing the holistic potential of your being.

In this process, the answer seamlessly dissolves into the question itself.

While Jung’s work predominantly focused on creating a dialogue between the conscious and the unconscious, his framework also facilitates a dialogue between the masculine and feminine energies within us.

Moreover, it provides a platform for acknowledging and integrating the internal components necessary for optimal system functioning. Through this lens, we can perceive ourselves as prototypes designed to navigate the complexities of human nature, a model that can be refined and adapted to address real-world challenges with greater efficacy.
