Life and Leadership: Keeping Your Eyes on Your Finish Line

Have you ever watched a chaotic derby? The kind where the track is buzzing with noise, the stands are packed with spectators shouting advice (whether you asked for it or not), and every competitor seems to be moving at lightning speed?

That’s what life and leadership often feel like. It’s exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. You’re not just trying to move forward; you’re navigating the noise, handling the unsolicited opinions, and fighting the all-too-human urge to look at everyone else’s race.

Here’s the catch: if you’re too busy looking around, you’ll miss your own finish line.

In the age of hyperconnectivity, comparison can feel almost inevitable. Social media, boardroom discussions, and even casual conversations can create a constant loop of "Who’s ahead?" or "Am I doing enough?" But here’s what I’ve learned: every time we let the noise dictate our focus, we lose a little bit of our clarity and a lot of our momentum.

Instead, leadership, whether in life or at work, requires a different kind of discipline. It’s the ability to stay grounded in your own vision, goals, and progress, even when the world around you seems to demand your attention.

This reminds me of something author and speaker Bob Goff said: “We won’t be distracted by comparison if we are captivated by purpose.”

Purpose is the solution to the chaos. When you’re deeply connected to your “why,” the noise fades. It doesn’t mean the spectators or opinions disappear, but it means you’re less tempted to give them the steering wheel.

In my own journey, I’ve found a few things that help:

1️⃣ Define Your Finish Line: What does success look like for you? Not for your peers, not for the industry, but for your unique path. Write it down. Refer to it often.

2️⃣ Filter the Noise: Not every opinion matters. Seek feedback from people who understand your vision and genuinely want to help you succeed.

3️⃣ Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection: Leadership isn’t a straight line. Every small win, every lesson learned, is a step closer to your goals.

4️⃣ Run Your Own Race: Remember, what works for someone else might not work for you, and that’s okay. You’re building something uniquely yours.

Life and leadership are messy. They’re noisy. But they’re also full of opportunity for those who stay focused on what truly matters.

As leaders, our job isn’t to silence the chaos but to rise above it. It’s about trusting our instincts, honoring our values, and keeping our eyes on the road ahead even when the crowd is cheering for us to look elsewhere.

What strategies help you stay focused on your race?
