Kellys Express- the Indonesian moving company built on trust
Rajah Murugesu, co-owner of this family business based in Jakarta, was delighted to chat with us by video call to give us the latest news on the company and the people what work there.
May 2021
Tell me about the company’s history and the key people in your organisation
I’m the co-owner of Kellys Express together with my wife Ani, and we set up the business here in Jakarta in Indonesia in July 2007. Why Kellys? Well, the company is named after my daughter Kelly, who now lives and works in Australia.
When we first started the business in 2007, no one knew us as a business, so we did a lot of networking and making connections to get the Kellys name out into the market. We started with just a small office, four members of the team including me, and a truck. Today, we provide domestic and international moving and destination services, and we have seven trucks, four warehouses, and 52 permanent employees. We also own a sister company, OECL/Jakarta, that deals in logistics and transportation of commercial goods. OECL is Singapore based with worldwide branches, dealing with commercial cargo.
Kellys Express is proud to be a member of the Harmony Relocation Network. We’re also members of IAM, PAIMA, IMA, GEM, EURA, Worldwide ERC, and we are FIDI affiliated and ISO 9001 certified.
Tell be a bit about your background
I was born in Ceylon (which is now known as Sri Lanka) before moving to London as a child. I’ve been in the moving and shipping industry for a good while now…. over five decades! My first job was in 1972 in the UK with a National Shipping line. From there, I moved to Australia in 1987 and worked for mining companies for a short while.
In 1992, I arrived in Singapore where I joined a Korean shipping company as the finance manager, before moving to another Middle East based company in the moving business who relocated me to Malaysia in 2000. After just four years there, I was headhunted by a relocation company based in Jakarta and I moved here to Indonesia in 2004. Just three years later in 2007, Ani and I decided that it was time to start up on our own, so we created Kellys Express, and well, the rest is history!
What services do you provide and who are your clients?
Kellys Express provides domestic and international household goods and office removals services and the full range of destination services such as home and school searches for people moving into Indonesia. We work directly with private customers, corporate clients and RMCs. We also support government departments and embassies with their moving and relocation needs.
Many of our customers are Japanese expats so several members of the team speak Japanese. We support many of the Japanese car manufacturers who have car plants here in Indonesia, and several companies in the automotive industry are setting up operations here. It might not seem the obvious location, but there is a key strategy behind the moves; Indonesia has two thirds of the world’s nickel reserves. As car manufacturers move into manufacturing electric cars, they need to be close to car battery manufacturers, and the key component in those is nickel. Indonesia really is the market to watch, so it will be exciting to see how things develop in this key industry for the Indonesian economy.
All of the members of our team speak English, and we support out staff to take English lessons to improve their skills. Language skills are all important in today’s world, and it’s a really valuable part of the service that we offer to our clients.
What makes you different from your competitors?
Our focus is first and foremost on the quality of the service that we provide. We recognise that different people from different parts of the world have different needs and outlooks, but our goal is to understand exactly what each client needs from a relocation service, and to provide a personalised service that meets those needs. Our job in everything we do is to make our customers happy; it’s all about trust and providing the personal touch.
As an organisation, we’re small enough to be flexible and agile in our decision-making to respond almost immediately to client requests, something which many of our larger competitors are unable to do, and I truly believe that this gives us the edge in terms of service.
Working in this part of the world has its complications, and we think outside of the box to provide creative and workable solutions to meet our clients’ needs. We’re qualified and experienced, and we’re committed to building strong, long-lasting relationships with our clients based on trust. Our pricing structure means that we’re also always competitively priced.
What is the household goods removals and relocation market like in Indonesia?
Of course, COVID-19 has impacted Indonesia as it has every country in the world. However, there are exciting times ahead as a lot of companies have already publicly announced heavy investment in the Indonesian economy, including Hyundai, Johnson & Johnson, and Heinz. We hope that these investments will have a positive impact for Kellys Express.
Tell me about some unusual things that you have moved
Well, we relocated the whole of the Australian embassy in Jakarta! It is the biggest Australian embassy in the world and they have 34 apartments inside the embassy complex and a residence that the ambassador and the embassy staff live in. It was a highly complex project with strict security protocols to adhere to, and some very interesting (but sadly confidential so I can’t share the details!) items to be moved! We were very proud to have completed the work with not one item missing or broken.
Over the years, we have helped many people in desperate situations who needed to move countries quickly due to the death of a partner or a family break up. These situations are always tricky, but we’re a strong team and we have the know-how to support clients when they need us the most.
Does your company get involved in any charities or support any community projects?
Yes, the company raises funds for an orphanage here in Jakarta for children with multiple disabilities. It’s a really important community project that we are proud to support. My wife and I are also both members of the Rotary Club. I am a ‘Paul Harris Award’ winner, an award given to someone for recognition of exceptional service to Rotary International and the community. Currently, I am the President of the Rotary club, CIlandak, Jakarta.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Well, we have a dachshund dog so I like to take him out for walks, and my wife’s a very keen gardener. In fact, she gets up at 5.30am every day to tend to the garden before going to the office!
Additionally, with my training, our 9-year-old daughter is a budding botanist.
Do the team get involved in any social activities together?
Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world so religious festivals are very important to many of our staff. In April and May 2021, Muslim’s observed Ramadan fasting, and at the end of the fast, we organised a feast for the staff to come together and celebrate with friends of all faiths, and we organise similar events twice every year for all of our staff.
We also organise company away weekends to the mountains or countryside locations, and we take part in team-building activities like climbing or sports. It’s just nice to get to spend time together away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
One final question. I heard that there’s a book about you?
Yes! It’s an autobiography about my life history from my birth in Sri Lanka, my schooldays, and moving abroad to the UK for education. In the book, I talk about how I have helped and inspired many people in my life, offering good advice and support for budding young professionals in areas like management skills and lessons on how to become successful in business. The book was launched by the British and Sri Lankan Ambassadors to Indonesia. And the title? It’s called “Life Begins at 60: Still Young at 75, Why?”. I chose the title because I came to Indonesia at the age of 60 and I’m still going strong in business at the age of 75. In fact, the book was published on my 75th birthday!
