Kerala achieves record rooftop solar generation, surpasses target ahead of schedule
Kerala's success in rooftop solar power production, exceeding its target of 500 MW by reaching 541 MW in November. The initiative has seen significant interest from households, with around 1.7 lakh already availing connections and three lakh more registered for the program.
For households with electricity bills between Rs 1500 to Rs 2500, a three-kilowatt solar setup costing around Rs 1.9 to 2 lakh with a 40% subsidy is sufficient. After consumption, the payment to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) stands at a reasonable rate of 2.69 per unit.
Despite setbacks during the COVID-19 crisis, the project has gained momentum after its relaunch in 2021, with plans for a solar city project in Thiruvananthapuram and a 155 MW solar park by the central government to further boost solar power production.
Both subsidized and non-subsidized projects have contributed to the state's solar power generation, with a projection to exceed the 1000 MW target this fiscal year. However, the shortage of materials, from solar panels to three-phase net meters, poses a hurdle for further connections.
Interested individuals can avail solar installations through Kerala State Electricity Board's E-Kiran, Anert, and the Centre's MNRE, with subsidies of 40% applicable for projects up to three kilowatts, reduced to 20% for projects between 3 to 10 kW, and not applicable for projects exceeding 10 kW.
