Key performance indicators of holistic wellness
Business owners use dashboards filled with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track their goals and success. Holistic Wellness required that we go beyond measuring our success in numbers alone. As a CPA who's worked with nonprofits in different capacities- from volunteer to external auditor to board member, etc.- I have seen firsthand how organizations and leaders are able to measure the impact on the lives of those they serve beyond numeric measures.
In life, you are more than a number. When you walk through a cemetery or sit through a eulogy, you read and hear what the deceased meant to others and what they did between the dash of their birthday and death.
I have selected a few words and will demonstrate how you can create KPIs that are more than just numbers, that are aligned with your SMART goals. As an educator and advisor who helps others prepare for career and business success in the Digital Age, I am well versed in the people/soft and critical skills needed. No longer is checking off boxes enough. To succeed in life going forward, you have to have the right mindset.
Everyone's journey and vision are different. Be sure to curate your KPIs based on what's important to you.
Below are a few words that are important to me:
How would you set up KPIs for accountability?
Consider how you set SMART goals. SMART goals are, specific, measurable, attainable, timely, realistic. True accountability, requires that you have good self-awareness. Completing various self-assessments can help you to identify areas you need support in, areas you could use accountability partners in.
I will give you an example from my personal life. I am working on getting to my optimal/ weight and health. Eating better, exercising regularly, sleeping well o a consistent basis can work. How would I turn that into a SMART goal?
I want to be at XYZ weight and feel a certain energy level by specific dates- summer and birthday. Weight is measurable, feeling a certain way is not. Energy would be a non-numerical KPI. How would I measure that? How would I hold myself acountable?
I recently started using a few apps to turn in my food, level up my nutrition game, etc. I have a sweet tooth and it is possible that I am a recovering sugar addict based on how much sweets I ate as a preteen, teen, and young adult. In 12 step programs, people are encouraged to have a sponsor. These apps are my digital sponsor. I have not taken a nutrition class since the lessons I received in middle school from my science teacher. It is refreshing to learn how to fuel my body for wellness, to say the least. As I log in meals, I wonder if entrepreneurs find it as tedious to update their business records as I find it to enter every ingredient of my home-cooked meals. That’s a story for another day.
One of the apps I am using really hones into the non-numeric aspects of overall wellness. Holistic wellness is priceless and personal. It’s truly about what’s important to you and what you envision your best life being like. You really have to access your life as you set your non-numerical dashboard and KPIs.
They say life is a marathon and not a sprint. When you drop off your running schedule, routine, you have to rebuild your base, to say the least. Consistency matters but so does resilience and grace.
I have run seven consecutive New York City marathons in the past. When I went back to school for graduate school for my master's in finance, I didn't have time to run. Being enrolled in an accelerated master's program, working full-time at a new job for half of the program, etc. I stopped running much and lost my base mileage. I wanted to run another marathon or just a regular race, I would have to start running regularly and build my base mileage, increasing the time and distance by 1% or 10% per week.
To commit to running again, I have to set a goal and literally mark it on my calendar. I would have to sign up for a race and start pacing myself. Seeing the race date on my calendar and non-numerical KPI dashboard would make me sprint into action and hold myself accountable, pun intended. Counting down the days until race day, checking off the training runs on the race training schedule, cross-training, and preparing physically and mentally for the race ahead would bring me energy, joy, and hope.
How in the world would you measure your energy level beyond numbers? Illustrate energy on your vision board? Using a gratitude journal, scanning your body, regularly meditating can help you measure snd boost your energy. Adding emojis and pictures and running quotes to your non-numerical vision board are some ways.
Regarding weight loss, I am using several apps and accountability partners to reach my optimal weight and learn about nutrition, functional medicine, healing, energy, etc. At the beginning of 2021, I started receiving acupuncture treatments. At the beginning of 2022, I started working with a health coach. I may start seeing a therapist regularly.
I recently started a 14-day trial of Noom. I am/loving the educational, empowering, entertaining messages and how I am feeling in getting supported in my wellness journey one step at a time without taking a lot of time… 5 to 15 minutes a day…
If you would like to try the app, use my referral code. You will receive a 20% discount code and I'll receive a $20 Amazon credit if you pay for a subscription. Be sure/to set a reminder for/yourself to cancel the trial subscription by the 14th day so you don’t get billed. Consult your doctor before starting any exercise/nutrition programs, etc.
