Know Your Way Out: Bus Emergency Essentials

Emergency exits are your lifeline. Let’s explore detailed information about emergency exits on buses, which will help the common man identify and use them during an emergency.

● Types of Emergency Exit to consider:

  1. Service Door: The main door used by passengers to enter and exit the bus during regular operation.
  2. Emergency Door: A secondary door designed for use during emergencies to allow passengers a safe exit.
  3. Driver’s Door (on the driver’s cab): A door specifically for the bus driver to access their seat and the driving controls.
  4. Escape Hatch (on the roof or on the floor): A hatch located on the roof or floor of the bus to provide an alternative escape route in emergencies.
  5. Emergency Side Window: A side window that can be opened or broken to create an emergency exit for passengers.
  6. Emergency Rear Window: A rear window designed to serve as an emergency exit, allowing passengers to evacuate from the back of the bus.
  7. Windscreen: A potential safety feature that can serve as an emergency exit by allowing the front windshield to be removed or broken in case of emergencies.

Only understanding the types of emergency exits is not sufficient. During an actual emergency, which exit is available and should be used depends on the position of the bus.

Bus positions to be considered after accident:

a) The bus is standing on its wheels

- When the bus is standing on its wheels (or on its roof), the service and emergency doors are sufficient to evacuate the bus. The best emergency exits are the doors: first the service doors, and then the emergency doors.

b) The bus could be in different positions

- When the bus is lying on its side, the usable emergency exits are the rear wall emergency exit and the escape hatches.

- Windows of the bus may be considered emergency exits if they are designed according to standard norms and regulations. As per the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), all sidewall windows fitted with breakable safety glass shall be designated as emergency windows. Designated emergency windows of breakable safety glass type shall be provided with a breaking device properly fastened by suitable means like a metallic chain, rope, etc., and shall be made easily identifiable with a self-luminescent label or a lighting device. The windscreen is a well-usable and very often used emergency exit in all past accident positions.

- The lower deck of a double-deck vehicle may have escape hatches on the lower floor.

Often, buses have multiple emergency exits, but these exits depend on the number of compartments, such as the driver compartment, passenger compartment, and seating layout, rather than the entire vehicle.

How to Use a Bus Emergency Exit:

  1. Locate the exit: Emergency exits are typically marked with red handles or signs.
  2. Unlatch: Pull the handle or lever to release the exit.
  3. Open: Push the exit door outward to create an opening.
  4. Evacuate: Quickly and calmly exit the bus, moving away from the danger.

Remember: Safety first! Follow instructions from authorities and assist others if possible.
