The war of Reconquista began with the ousted white nobles of Iberia who had taken refuge in the unconquered northwestern Spanish Asturias highlands in 900 AD. A small Christian enclave of Visigoths provoked a conflict between Christians and Muslim states in the north and began the process of expansion and re-conquest of Iberia in fits and starts which lasted over several years. The end came for the Moors in 1492. The leader of Moorish Granada surrendered to the recently united army of Christian Spain. The united army of Ferdinand II of Aragan and Isabella I of Castile ended the 800 years of Moorish rule in Iberia. It also ended an age of progress for the region.
History recorded that in 1491, subsequent to the refusal of Muhammed XII to heed the call of Ferdinand and Isabella to surrender the city of Granada to the Castilians, the city was besieged and eventually capitulation came on January 2, 1492.
The conquest of the Moors (1492) ushered in the Christian rule of Ferdinand and Isabella. Christianity was now the religion of these European rulers.
After the fall of Granada, the plight of non-Christians was one of persecution, prosecution and expulsion or death. They were all victims of a state policy based on racist theological arguments which had the backing of both the church and the Royal Council which established the immediate legal precedent with the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492.
From what we have seen thus far, we can deduce that Moorish culture embraced learning and academic achievement. It was the hallmark of Moorish society in Spain. Their accomplishment shatters the baseless myth that people of Berber decent (black people) are incapable of great achievements.
During that period Europeans were not known for religious tolerance. The day before Columbus left Spain to journey to the New World, all the unconverted to Christianity were expelled from Spain with ethnic cleansing.
These events set the stage for Italian explorer Christopher Columbus’ journey of discovery to the New World.
