Rio Tinto trials renewable diesel at U.S. operations

Rio Tinto has successfully completed a renewable diesel trial at its U.S. Borax mine in Boron, California, and is now conducting a second trial at the Kennecott copper operations in Salt Lake City, Utah, to determine the suitability of renewable diesel for open pit haulage. 

Rio Tinto Vice President of Global Procurement Simon Richmond said: “The renewable diesel trials at our U.S. Borax and Kennecott operations could pave the way for Rio Tinto to be the first mining company in the U.S. to operate a fully renewable fleet. It’s a very exciting step towards reducing the carbon footprint of our U.S. operations.”

Tesla considering bid for Sigma Lithium Corp

Tesla (TSLA.O) is considering acquiring Sigma Lithium Corp, a Canada-based battery metals mining company, the company's U.S.-listed shares increased by 21% in after-hours trading. According to Bloomberg News, Tesla has been in discussions with potential advisors regarding a possible acquisition, and Sigma Lithium is among several mining alternatives being considered by the electric vehicle manufacturer as it considers refining its own materials.

According to insiders familiar with the matter, Tesla has been in talks with potential advisors regarding a potential bid. The report also stated that as Tesla considers refining its own materials, it is currently exploring several mining options, including Sigma Lithium.

Glencore joins world's first Battery Passport initiative

Glencore has joined the world’s first battery passport proof of concept launched by the Global Battery Alliance.

As the world seeks to address climate change, minerals are set to play a pivotal role in decarbonising energy consumption and mobility. 

At the same time, society’s expectations with respect to the environmental and social performance of companies continue to increase. 

The ESG performance of mineral production as well as battery and vehicle manufacturing must be clearly communicated to our customers and other key stakeholders.

Top 10 trends in mining technology

Equinix Mining Technology Report 2021-22 draws on insights from leaders across the industry to paint a picture of current technology and innovation trends. 

Miners are investing heavily in technology such as data, connectivity and telecommunications, and automation. Of survey respondents, 93% are increasing overall spend, while 44% said they are significantly increasing investment.

Despite the challenges the industry has faced over the last two years, such as economic slowdowns, increased operational complexity and greater health and safety considerations, as well as business disruptions due to the pandemic, the future is incredibly bright. In general, mining leaders are very optimistic about their prospects.
