Nitin Gadkari highlights road safety crisis: More deaths on Indian roads than in conflicts
Speaking at the sixth edition of the FICCI Road Safety Awards and Conclave 2024, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari underscored the gravity of the situation, revealing that India faces around 5 lakh accidents annually, resulting in 1.5 lakh deaths and 3 lakh injuries. He pointed out that road accidents in India have claimed more lives than wars, militancy, and Naxalism combined. Gadkari also noted, “The current situation causes a 3% loss to the country’s GDP. It is not just the drivers who are at fault; inadequate road engineering contributes significantly to accidents”
Govt proposes stricter seat-belt regulations to boost road safety from 2025
The Centre’s proposed vehicle safety regulations require seat-belt reminders for front-facing rear seats in passenger cars (M1 category) manufactured after April 1, 2025. The draft rules aim to ensure that passengers wear seat belts, significantly lowering the risk of injury in the event of an accident. These proposed safety standards are part of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989, which specify certain safety features, including safety belts, restraint systems, and seat-belt reminders, for vehicles manufactured after specific dates.

Nod for 400 new posts to improve road safety in UP

Initially, the finance department has approved 50 ARTO (Road Safety) posts and 351 MVI posts.

Malaysia commits to reducing road traffic speeds in school zones

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced this decision, along with the introduction of speed bumps in school zones.
