Lead a Better—More Human—1:1

Lead a Better—More Human—1:1

Too often, 1:1s become a checklist of reminders, updates, and to-dos.

Remember, these meetings aren’t just about tasks—they’re about people.

If we’re not intentional, we risk missing out on the opportunity to truly connect with and support our team members.

Make Your 1:1s More Impactful

Here are a few reminders to bring humanity and intentionality to your 1:1s and annual reviews:

1️⃣ They’re human beings, not human doings. Think about inviting more of their full self into their work. What drives them? What challenges are they navigating outside of work? These questions build connection and trust.

2️⃣ Lean on your core values. When performance gaps appear—or when you’re celebrating wins—tie the conversation back to your organization’s core values. It reinforces the "why" behind expectations and shows how their work contributes to the bigger picture.

3️⃣ Give them space to share. Sometimes, silence can feel uncomfortable, but it’s necessary. Cue those awkward silences to let your team open up fully.

4️⃣ Ask: What’s on your mind? This simple question creates room for them to share what’s most important, whether it’s a win, a challenge, or an idea they’ve been holding back.

5️⃣ Respond with: Tell me more. It’s a small phrase, but it signals that you’re actively listening and want to dig deeper into what matters most to them.

Take Your Annual Reviews to the Next Level

The way you lead your 1:1s and annual reviews has a direct impact on engagement, retention, and performance. It’s worth taking a moment to reflect:

  • Are your 1:1s leaving your team feeling seen and valued—or just checked off the list?
  • What could you do differently to make these meetings a tool for connection and growth?
