A LEADER'S BIGGEST ASSET: ABILITY TO CHANGE
Change is the only constant in life - Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher
If we observe nature and learn, it has unique ways to teach us life lessons.
October 31st, 2012, two days after Hurricane Sandy hits the coast of New Jersey, I and my husband went out for some work. New Jersey was severely impacted by the Hurricane with more than 2 million households losing power and more than 300,000 houses were destroyed. We saw that several trees had fallen down blocking the roads due to which the majority of the roads were closed. The hurricane recovery team was working 24/7 to restore everything to normal conditions. At the same time, I observed that even though trees had fallen, nothing happened to reeds and this taught me the most important lesson in my life.
Trees fell down because they were rigid. They did not bend and hence they could not resist the winds and the rain while reeds were flexible. They bent with the wind and survived the storm. They did not break. We humans could learn something from this.
We need to change with changing times. Change is inevitable and is required. Without change, the advancements of the modern world would not have been possible. Hence we must embrace change and learn to adapt to the change. Great leaders are the ones who are open to the ideas and views of other people. and are flexible. This strength of theirs gives them the ability to lead people from different backgrounds. People who are flexible and are willing to change with changing times thrive in their careers as well in life. Their flexibility improves their relationships with others. At the same time people who are rigid, become obsolete. Hence embrace change. Keep in mind, Oak trees don’t bend and hence they break. Reeds bend and hence they thrive in any weather. Even Dinosaurs became extinct because they could not adopt the change. Make a decision today itself to be flexible and enjoy the journey by adapting to the changing times.
