Leaders Read#61

👋 Hello everyone,

Ronald Regan said, "The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things."

Here are a couple of resources you might have missed:

📚 Book Summary:

This week's book is "Swim with Sharks" by Harvey MacKay.

This book was written during the era of Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, and its title will never work today. However, its wisdom remains relevant. Harvey Mackay, like Zig Ziglar, offers insights that are as applicable now as they were in 1988.

One of my favorite takeaways from the book is this:

"If you develop a leadership style that delivers your message in a positive way, and if you demonstrate your confidence in your people by giving them the freedom to do the job you hired them to do. Be like jockey Willie Shoemaker. He's the best in the business because he has the lightest touch on the reins. They say the horse never knows he's there—unless he's needed."

✅ Actionable advice:

Let it sink in that the quote above has stood the test for 36 years. There are only two real long-term leadership goals: continually improving business outcomes and making employees feel valued and supported. In Derek Sivers's book Anything You Want, he wrote, "Trust, but verify." You have spent time going through resumes and interviews. You have done your homework and selected the best candidates. Now, let your people do their jobs. Hold onto those reins lightly, embrace your team's knowledge, and switch from a fixed mindset as a single decision-maker to a strategic leader who drives overall organizational success.

🧠 5 things I'm thinking about (November 15, 2024)

1.Improving our decisions with data

2.Connecting with managers globally

3.Improving customer's needs for better outcomes

4.Thinking Strategy Mapping

5.Finished Strategy Execution Module 4

Reading "Useful Not True" by Derek Sivers.

Have a great week!
