Leaders We Love 🧡: Get To Know Carlos Terol, The Founder Of Good Ripple

Welcome to 'Leaders We Love', a series of interviews that spotlights pioneering leaders who are creating purpose-led brands with a focus on conscious marketing. My goal is to inspire brands to adopt a more positive, sustainable, impactful, accessible and inclusive approach to marketing.

This week, I am so excited to feature Carlos Terol , the Founder of Good Ripple . He is such an inspiration, and I’m grateful for his participation.

What's your brand's mission, and how does it align with your personal values?

Our mission at Good Ripple is to connect and inspire passionate changemakers who are ready to make a positive impact in the world and take action.

This is just the best way we've found to create our vision: a world where the dream of global prosperity in balance with the planet is a reality for everyone, everywhere.

This vision and mission are a reflection of my personal values. I've spent the last 8 years developing myself as a changemaker. At the age of 25, I was lucky enough to find my purpose in life: to help others and create a positive impact in this planet.

I came up with the idea of Good Ripple around 8 years ago, but never felt ready to make it a reality. Last year, I sat down to deeply reflect about my life and values, wondering what would be the most impactful thing I could do in my life. And I realized it was Good Ripple - a platform to empower changemakers to create positive change and amplify their impact.

How do you integrate social impact into your marketing decision-making process?

The last two words of our vision summarize this very well: "everyone, everywhere." In other words, a key component of our brand is being hyper inclusive, and democratizing access to information and resources.

Because we don't want to limit our social or environmental impact to our immediate surroundings. Rather, we aim to extend it to everyone in this planet (a pretty ambitious dream, I know!).

This is reflected in all our marketing decision-making process. At the moment, our only marketing strategy comes from an organic, content strategy on LinkedIn . The MVP of Good Ripple takes the form of a community, which has grown from 0 to 1,340 members in 10 months. Around 90% of our members join through my own personal profile on LinkedIn, with the remaining 10% being word of mouth (roughly).

When we create content and send out emails to community members, we do so bearing in mind we have a very diverse tribe, with people from over 80 countries. To achieve real, lasting impact, we need a very diverse and cross-cultural environment. We do our best to facilitate such an environment.

How do you educate and engage your community about your brand's mission and social impact?

Good question! We actually take a very relaxed and informal way of communicating our brand's mission. Rather than repeating explicitly our mission, we focus on creating it and delivering it.

In that sense, we create a lot of content that inspire changemakers to take action. We host monthly events with networking opportunities to connect and spark conversations around impact. We make it effortless for people to connect and collaborate with others.

One of our most popular resources is a simple Google Sheet with our community members' LinkedIn profiles. We are told very often how useful this sheet is, and how many collaborations and connections have been created thanks to it. If you’d like to access this Google Sheet to connect with other changemakers, it’s really easy (and free!). Just go to this link and sign up. The link should take you directly to the Sheet, but if it doesn’t, just head to the Content section on the left panel, and then click on LinkedIn Profiles (should be the second item from the top).

We believe that education is the foundation for all change. Nobody can wake up one day wanting to change the world if they didn't learn about the issues first. It's all part of a journey of personal and global transformation. And we do our best to educate people, trying to inspire them to take positive action.

What marketing activity, campaign, or initiative have you worked on that has brought you the most joy? Why?

Definitely our monthly events with guest speakers and networking sessions. It's super inspiring to see so many people coming every month on these events and learning actionable ways to make a difference.

At the end of each event, we host a networking session where we split people up in breakout rooms to know each other better and discuss a couple of questions.

The best part for me is when I jump on calls with changemakers and they tell me how thanks to those events and networking sessions, they met other changemakers with whom they are now collaborating on projects and creating more positive impact.

To me, that means the entire world. It means we are really helping people connect and amplify their individual impact by coming together and collaborating. Helping others in this way is the most fulfilling part of what we do.

What has been your biggest challenge in marketing a purpose-driven brand so far, and how did you overcome it?

It's hard to pick just one! So I'll go with two!

One of them has been the fact that there are quite a few haters and climate-deniers out there. When trying to create positive impact, there will always be people who will criticize you and your vision. I've had a few encounters and even calls with people who were just trying to push me down and give up.

They are difficult to digest. Even if you know you are doing the right thing, negativity can take over and you can start doubting your own vision and mission. The way I'm trying to overcome this (still working on it), is to learn to stay true to one's values, even when others disagree. It's easier said than done, and at a personal level I must say that meditation has helped me a lot with this.

The second biggest challenge is probably impostor syndrome. When trying to create a platform for positive change, I sometimes wonder: "who am I to do this?" or "am I really prepared for this?" or "can I really do it?"

Similarly to the first challenge above, when you start marketing your brand and yourself, you will start getting lots of people behind you, both good and bad. It's part of the marketing process. And it's important to learn that we cannot make everyone happy in this world. But we should focus on making the majority happy, at least.

And I've learned to change my inner questions to: "If not me, then who?" and "If not now, then when?"

This simple mindset change makes all the difference to stay strong when the storms come (because they always come).

What new developments, trends, or technologies give you hope for the future of marketing and keep you energised?

There's a key trend that gives me a lot of hope: I see more and more people in the marketing space moving to a purpose-driven niche.

This is really inspiring, as it means we are undergoing a key mindset shift in society. People no longer want to just buy a product. They want to buy a product which they know it's making a positive impact on people and the planet.

People no longer want to work for the sake of a salary. They want to make a difference. They want to contribute to something bigger. They want to make an impact.

I see more and more people changing jobs to green and social impact jobs. I see more and more social impact and sustainability roles being advertised.

The future is bright. We are moving in the right direction. We just need to keep pushing to ensure we get there as fast as possible. We can do this together!
