Leadership and Blind Spots

Leadership and Blind Spots

BED Talk 252 is about leadership and blind spots.

Here’s my question to you … When you think about positional leaders, which leader would you rather serve under?

First, a leader who thinks they're a servant leader but they're not. In other words, they're saying they’re a servant leader but in implementation and execution, they’re not.

Second, a leader who says, I'm not a servant leader, I don't want to be a servant leader. I'm all about getting stuff done. And it's about outcomes, not you, my team members.

Third, a leader who's open to hearing from you what kind of leader they are and they're committing to doing the work to show up as the leader they want to be based upon the feedback from.

You may be thinking, Jeff, that's a setup question. Maybe it is. But I want you to think about those options.

It’s my personal belief is that the most dangerous of leaders in that group is the leader who thinks they're a servant leader, but they're not showing up that way. Because they're not going to change because they’re already there.

As a team member, I'd rather have someone that says, Look, this is all about me. This is all about my ego. I'm all about fulfilling myself and achieving things that make me look good.

I'd rather hear that than someone who says, I'm a servant leader, but they're not.

For me, my top choice is someone who says, I know what I want to be, but I don't know what I am. I'm going to find out from you, the people I supposedly serve, what you think and take your feedback and act on it. That seems obvious to me.

But the other one is interesting – would I rather have the someone who believes they're already there OR someone who says I'm not there and I don't want to be there.

Love to see your comments and input on this.
