Is Leadership different from Management?
This became a hot topic in one of the forums I participate, so I'll reproduce here my two cents.
In fact this is a matter of opportunity. Being a manager or a leader are not mutually exclusive. That's quite the opposite! It is possible (and even desireable) for the same person to be a manager or a leader.
Leadership is a matter of initiative; Management is a matter of accountability
It reminds me of a Ted Talks speech in which Elizabeth Gilbert, the writer, talks about the so-called "Creative Genius". Long story short, she covers the challenge of creative people to understand that they are not genius all the time. They did (and probably will do again in the future) genius things.
That's exactly what happens with leaders! They will lead people when they feel confident and able to do so:
- Leadership is a matter of initiative;
- Management is a matter of accountability.
That's why leaders tend to be easily recognized. When a challenge arises, they will have initiative and take the lead while others exitate.
When he is not ahead of a challenge (most of the time), the leader becomes a normal human being and it includes being a manager.
Does it make sense?
