Leadership Growth Starts from Within: Discover the 5 Phases

As leaders, I know it’s easy to get caught up in the doing.

After all, success often feels tied to what you achieve—higher productivity, better team performance, or hitting those business growth targets.

The truth is, when you’re focused solely on results, it can feel like you're constantly chasing the next goal without finding true satisfaction or clarity.

Deep down, you might be asking yourself: What am I missing here?

I get it.

Leadership is full of pressures and expectations.

But let me gently challenge this perspective:

What if the key to achieving everything you want isn’t just in what you do, but in who you are as a leader?

The first step to growth and self-leadership is knowing where you are now and where you want to go next.

After working with leaders for many years, developing my own self-leadership, and conducting thorough research, I have identified the five stages of leadership.

Phase 1 - Authority

Leaders heavily rely on rules and regulations to compel people in the organisation to take action. People only follow the leader because they feel obligated to do so, as the leader has power and authority over them.

Phase 2 - Affinity

Leaders are starting to establish relationships with their team members. People follow because they want to because they feel a connection or affinity with the leader.

Phase 3 - Achievement

Leaders are proving their value by achieving results. People follow because they walk the talk.

Phase 4 - Advancement

Leaders are helping team members grow their potential as leaders. People follow because of what the leader has done to advance and develop the team.

Phase 5 - Aspiration

Leaders are committed to growing themselves and others. They go beyond to become exceptional, outstanding examples of leadership, icons of leadership success. People follow because of who the leader is and what they represent, and people aspire to the same values and ideals.

How to go to the next level?

To lead well and commit to ongoing learning and improvement, you must always know where you are going.

These key questions will guide you in your leadership journey and help you transition from one phase to another until you reach Phase 5, Aspiration.

1. What do you notice about your current leadership status? 

Is there anything that holds you back? Are you actively investing in your own growth and potential?

2. What do your current organisational relationships look like? 

Does your team feel liked, heard, or valued?

3. What kind of leader do you want to become?

What values and beliefs are important to you? What kind of behavior should you have? What habits must be established? What goals, dreams or results do you want to achieve?

4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the current leadership trainings or programs in your organisation? 

Are they promoting the long-term growth of your team? Are they developing the potential and leadership capacity of the people inside your organisation? Or are they only concerned with the short-term achievements and immediate results of the team?

5. What are your personal and organisational values?

Are they strong and aligned with each other?
