Elon Musk’s Early Childhood and Education:

Elon Musk was born in 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa to to Errol and Maye Musk. Elon’s father was Engineer and Property Developer and his mother was a dietician and model. Musk also has two siblings, a brother and a sister. Musk was exceptionally intelligent and a voracious reader since his early childhood. Musk grew up with his head stuck in books and computers. He developed a video game at an early age of 12 and sold it to a computer magazine. Musk left South Africa in 1988 after getting a Canadian passport because he refused to support apartheid through compulsory military duty and wanted to pursue the higher economic prospects offered in the United States. Musk moved to the United States in 1992 to study business and physics at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned an undergraduate degree in economics before continuing on to earn a second bachelor's degree in physics. Musk went to Stanford University in California to earn a Ph.D. in energy physics after leaving Penn. But that Ph.D couldn’t make it to Elon Musk Degrees since he walked out of Stanford after only two days to start his first firm.

Elon Musk Startups:

Since his early childhood, Musk was fascinated with superhero comics. He wanted to solve the problem humanity will face in the future. After growing up, he started or partnered in many ventures to solve those problems:

1. Tesla (to focus on EV):

Elon was well aware that relying on fossil fuel for transportation is not sustainable. Thus, through Tesla he wanted to replace fossil fuel vehicles with electric vehicles (EV). Though Ev was invented more than 100 years ago, it was not commercially viable due to range issue, safety and ugly looking. With Tesla he changed the entire EV ecosystem in the world. He even made all of Tesla’s patent public for general good.

2. SolarCity (to focus on Solar Power Generation):

Elon was well aware that we need to move from fossil fuel based energy generation to renewable/solar generation. Through SolarCity, he created innovative business models which is even replicated in many other countries.

3. SpaceX: To focus on space exploration and making human a multi-planetary species. Elon was convinced that the earth has limited resources and increasing population will put further stress to earth’s resources. Thus we need to other inhabitable planet in the space. The main constrain was rocket cost. Thus, he planned to make reusable rocket. No one prior to him including NASA thought that it is possible. But he was convinced, created a team of like minded people and after three failures he succeeded.

4. OpenAI: To focus on AI.

5. Neuralink: To focus on brain-computer interface(AI)

6. Starlink: To focus on high speed internet anywhere on earth.

7. The Boring Company: To focus on low-cost transportation.

8. Hyperloop: To focus on high speed transportation.

Leadership Lessons from Musk:

Elon Musk has shown many exceptional leadership skills. We all can learn from him and get inspired:

1. Perseverance:

He was bullied in his childhood and considered as an outcast. He failed to thrice with reusable rocket and both Tesla and SpaceX was at the verge of bankruptcy. The whole world was against him. But he continued and succeed in his forth attempt.

2. Thinking Big and Believing in Possibilities:

His all business venture are example of his big thinking.

3. Chasing Dreams and Risk Taking

4. Work Super Hard:

He himself confessed that he works around 100 hours a week. Most of the time he even sleep in his office.

5. Lead by Example

6. Innovative Thinking

7. Inspire others to Dream Big

8. Ambitious

9. Charismatic

10. Integrity

Conclusion:

There are many leadership lessons we can learn from Musk like: Perseverance; Work Super Hard; Taking Risk; Inspire Others to Dream Big; Believe in Your Dreams etc.. Though, the most important leadership lesson we can learn from him is “Never Give Up.” After his third failure in a row with launching of reusable rocket, one reporter asked him in an interview, “Why don’t you give up?” Elon replied “I never give up. I have to be dead or completely incapacitated to give up!” If you have a strong conviction in your dreams, work super hard to achieve it, don’t listen to the little man (what other people are saying) and never give up!
