Have you ever experienced cognitive dissonance?

It’s when you experience two contradictory beliefs within your own mind. 

It happens a lot when you make a change. While you might intellectually understand something, sometimes, it takes a while for your brain and belief system to catch up to your new reality. 

I’ll give you an example. When COVID-19 hit, demand for Happiness Concierge exploded. I needed help, and fast. 

I hired a great team member. I spent the time investing in getting them confident in taking ownership. It was incalculable the value of the support as the business grew, both to the quality of our work and my mental health. I felt, quite simply, with the right person in the right job, using the right tools: like a different person. All of a sudden, I had time to work on the business, not just in the business. It was truly life changing.

Yet … as I documented their onboarding manual, I heard my ‘old self’ say, ‘I don’t know what they’re going to do around here’, ‘there mightn’t be enough for them to do’, and ‘I hope I’m a good boss. Will I be a good boss?’ 

Naughty old self! What a pain in the ass. Honestly!

But you know what? It was just doing its job: keeping me safe with what I knew: being busy. 

See, a huge workload didn’t help me grow the business, but it was familiar to me. And what we love most as humans is what is familiar to us.

But, I also heard another voice, too. It was my new identity calling me back to what I knew I was capable of, even if I needed a little help believing it. One I intellectually understood, but hadn’t yet ‘stepped into’. It said something different to my fears. It invited me into what stepping into my best self looked like. It said, ‘Imagine what you could do with this business with more people helping you!’

It took me weeks to believe in what I was doing. I wanted and needed the support, I just didn’t know how to be ‘the new version of me’ with world class support.

I wanted to evolve my identity, and be a leader who could grow this company but my sneaky subconscious was still holding on to what I knew. Through reflecting on why I was saying one thing and doing another, I was able to reconcile my cognitive dissonance. I was able, over time, to retrain my brain to upgrade to a new level of thinking, one I intellectually understood and could accept emotionally.

Do you have one voice telling you to stay where you are and another saying there’s more out there for you?

For the thousands of people I have worked with, I can tell you there is. Only, one voice is louder than the other.

I’ve learned that it can take time to outgrow your old reality, even when intellectually you understand it’s good for you. I’ve also learned that, through trial and error, the voice you give the most time to is the one that dictates your reality. 

I did have doubts hiring a team member. I had confidence to untangle within myself. But, I decided to turn down the volume of doubt and start turning up the volume of what I knew, with support and time, I was truly, capable of.

Instead, I decided to start telling myself a new story:

  • 'When I invest time into working on the business, I grow the business.' 
  • 'By growing the business, I am providing for my team and my clients.'
  • 'I am growing people’s businesses, careers, lives and bank accounts when I show up and focus on the big picture. '
  • 'I am not letting my team down when I focus on the business. Rather, I am paving the way.'
  • 'When I ‘save the day’, I keep those around me small.'
  • 'When I ‘step in to fix’, I keep the business and myself small.'

Do you see the difference?

Manifestation experts say that in this moment – the moment between an old belief and a new one – it is critical to temporarily suspend belief and judgement to enable yourself to step into your new reality.

Our reality is so often a reflection of our fears, not our true desires. Our reality expands to the level of our fears, not our desires. Our brains are always trying to find ways to keep ourselves safe.

So, when we create the space for a new reality to occur, in steps our brain seeking certainty. To really grow, more than simply intellectually, we need to have a little faith that might sometimes defy ‘logic’. 

As your mindset catches up with your new reality, you can give yourself some comfort knowing that while it might feel a little wild, a little odd, and a little ‘too good to be true’, eventually you’ll get over the hump of uncertainty and step up into a whole new level of what you are completely capable of doing.

Growth doesn’t need to represent massive changes. Rather, by taking small steps of action, and committing to change, and investing in the future, you are able to create an entirely new reality.

I want to invite you to imagine a different year for yourself.

Imagine ... feeling excited about welcoming team members back to work (be honest!). Feedback conversations actually working this year. Feeling proud of your team because you truly set them up for success. Time to breathe, take a minute and actually enjoy your leadership between meetings. Time to have a cup of coffee in the morning, alone without freaking out about your to do list. The voice in your head saying ‘can I do this?’, being reassured with someone who’s been there, and gets it.

Over the years I’ve refined a process that has enabled me to feel comfortable in my leadership. It’s enabled me to get in control of my workload, deliver amazing results for my clients, feel good about how I show up, back myself and grow my business. I feel like a completely different person to the person I started this business as and I’m damn proud of that.
