Leadership and Purpose

Ever wonder what’s in it for you to always be the one to keep things on track? How could you benefit from this role you play?

Let me first acknowledge you for being a leader. Even if you’re not in the official leadership position, you are a leader when you are aware of when and how the team is drifting away from its purpose.

An essential element of leadership is holding and tracking progress relative to the group’s purpose. If everyone—including the official leader—is off doing their part, but no one’s tracking the direction all those disparate efforts are moving the family, the company, the men’s group, or the municipal government, then tensions ensue, chaos shows up, and goals cannot be achieved. It’s as if the wheels on the car were all going in different directions: no concerted forward motion.

It takes broader perspective, enhanced presence, and an augmented attention-span to experience purpose, whether for the team or for your personal life.

So, I want to congratulate you. Purpose only arises when we see our place in the larger scheme of things, and you’re connecting to the bigger picture, so I want to acknowledge that you are dialed in.

Now I encourage you to take this to the next level. Maybe you already do. Read this first, and then practice.

Sit in a neutral and attentive way. Close your eyes, and let your attention be filled with the information of the senses (touch, smell, taste, and sound), bringing you squarely into the present moment and clearing the mind.

Once you sense the mind quieting, let your consciousness connect with the energy of everyone nearby. Feel it all without judgment.

Then become aware of the flow of conscious energy in the community. Include the natural forces as well. Be the eye of the storm of activity all around.

Continue expanding your conscious awareness slowly outward to envelop the whole earth, our beautiful blue home, floating in silence.

And finally let yourself include the vastness of space in your awareness. Feel the peaceful flow of energy from which all our planet’s natural resources, its noisy population, and your own team’s goals derive.

Bask in the peace that is yours for connecting with the bigger purpose.   That’s what you get for being the one who keeps things on track. Thank you.
