Leading with Humility

Leading with Humility

"Humility is the solid foundation of all virtues." Confucius

According to the dictionary, "the quality of not thinking that you are better than other people" is humility. This is an attitude /mindset that many leaders possess and many are encouraged to cultivate.

Some of the reasons Humility is a plus are:

  • You are open to learning and remain curious. This is because you do not carry the burden of being infallible.
  • It is an amazing catalyst to nurture & cement beautiful relationships.
  • You are a great listener as it is not always about you.
  • It builds quiet confidence that is such a plus for sustaining the motivation of a team & helping the team grow.
  • It is a vital requirement for authentic leadership

Sharing here two talks which according to me give beautiful explanations of Humility.

One is a TED talk & a TEDxTalk on this topic:

Raymond Tang- be Humble

This is a short and crisp talk on what the philosophy water teaches us.

Three beautiful lessons:

-Humility that gives water its power

-Harmony which is Aligned to who I am

-Openness that is all about being open to change

The poem that inspires him is this simple yet profound one:

Screenshot From the TED talk

Loved the conclusion where he shares how whenever he is stressed he asks himself, "What would Water do?"

This next TEDx talk is a beautiful pointer to why Humility is important in leaders.

Marvin Epstein- Why humility matters in leadership?

An interesting talk that asks you to find answers to some very important questions:

Who you are & Not what you do?

Ask Why. A powerful question.

Be yourself

What I need in life are those things that I value.

He says it powerfully with," Those who have a lot to say do a lot of talking; and those who do, have a lot of people talking about them!

In his talk he shares a quote from Simon Sinek that sums up humility powerfully.

Would love to know your take on Humility. How do you see it as a factor of growth?

There are two aspects to this. One: self attribution problem of paradox of humility. The person who says s/he is humble is not humble. :-) ... Then there is so much hype and conditioned thoughts about LEADERSHIP and LEADING. Two: In this world of BANI, may be the LEADER - FOllOWER model is outdated and cause of a lot of problems. Intsead of the Bison herd , may be flying birds or the the ants are the way. They are self organizing who are able to complete complex tasks and surivive.

Well said Rashmi Shetty. Humility is one of the most important traits for an individual to possess and exhibit, and all the more so for leaders. A down-to-earth attitude where you listen to others, give space to others, let them know that it's not about You at all, goes a long way in building a trust and respect based team and organization, and truly rubs off the team as well.
