I’m no longer dealing with the League of Crappy Super Villains.
But I used to…
When I started running my original consulting business back in 2005 I was told that I should be focusing on getting referrals.
It made sense because I thought referrals were evidence of me doing a good job!
Logical...
However, I discovered 2 big problems with referrals.
1. You can't grow a business, at the speed you want, relying on referrals. Waiting on someone else to act before you can see a result.
2. Some Referrals are just BAD.
Have you ever had a bad referral?
You usually get them from clients who have caused you problems in the past.
It's those bad clients (those D clients).
They hunt in packs.
Secretly scheming behind the scenes.
Like some Evil League of Crappy Super Villians plotting to ruin your day.
And they do it in the most mundane ways.
Coffee Conversations that waste your time are the prime example.
You go to a meeting with these guys and they pick your brain for ideas and never want to go ahead with any legitimate work.
And god forbid, they get past your screening process where they can really make a mess within your business.
Calling for an itemised list of hours you worked.
Questioning every suggestion.
Fighting your ability to get a result at every turn.
NO…no more.
It's one of the reasons I stopped focusing on referrals and started focusing on auditioning ideal clients based on criteria that I choose when I want them.
I never have to rely on referrals again.
Having a system like this in your business is magic.
I call it the 'Lead Barrel'.
It’s the opposite of having to wait on a referral.
Instead, you can tap the Lead Barrel when you want to speak with new client opportunities.
It enables you to grow your business at a speed that suits you.
You then have the freedom to decide if you build your business for lifestyle or build for speed…it’s completely up to you.

Don't get me wrong, I still receive referrals, but I'm far more picky about where they come from.
And, they always go through my pipeline process or they don’t get in.
