Learning to Learn

Experience that opens us must come before cognitive framing if we are to maximize deeper learning capacity. My Learning Through Experience podcast takes the stance that experience precedes thinking that challenges our paradigms and assumptions. And in order to confront the status quo, we need to have experiences that open us up to learning. As we launch into our third season, I’m asking all of my guests a cornerstone question: What formative, galvanizing experience led you to follow your professional path? What helped bring you here, and to care so much about what you care about?

In this first episode, my guest—colleague and friend, and an authority on adult education and development Lisa Lahey—shares a personal story about struggling to respond to her parents’ dinner invitation, which begged the questions about why is it important to include your own preferences in the equation of what you’re trying to make happen as you navigate this world? And why might it be challenging and normal to struggle with doing so?


The Power of Listening

Listening is key to the narrative. Deep listening can lead to more meaningful interactions and stronger relationships—in life and certainly in the workplace. It’s a skill to cultivate, and by doing so, we can create environments where everyone feels heard.

As Lisa emphasized, effective listening isn’t just about hearing words; it’s about understanding the emotions and intentions behind them.

Understanding Adult Development Theory

Equally essential is balancing personal relationships with self-identity. By recognizing our own developmental stages, we can learn to better navigate the complexities of workplace dynamics and foster a culture of mutual support.

Learning vs. Deeper Personal Development

There is a critical distinction to be made between learning and development. We talk about how it can often be easier to take up the surface problem and reduce immediate anxiety. But that reactive approach leaves the underlying deeper learning untouched—and may even remove some of the incentive to address it because the anxiety has been temporarily relieved.

To meet the complexity of the demands in front of us, we often need deep learning. Deep learning can lead to development. Development helps us have more choice, enhances our professional lives, and helps us achieve our goals.

The Role of Interpersonal Relationships

How do other people who are also development themselves help you to develop? Lisa highlighted that interpersonal relationships can either support or hinder our growth. She encouraged listeners to cultivate healthy workplace relationships that promote collaboration and trust. By fostering an environment where individuals feel safe to express themselves, organizations can unlock the full potential of their teams.

Overcoming Barriers with the Immunity to Change Framework

Lisa’s “immunity to change” framework helps us identify and overcome the fears and assumptions that hold us back. By recognizing these barriers, we can take actionable steps toward change. Lisa provided insights on how to implement this framework in everyday situations, empowering listeners to break free from limiting beliefs.

Embracing a Culture of Transformation

By fostering an environment that encourages experimentation and learning from failures, organizations can adapt and thrive in an ever-changing landscape. Leadership is critical in this process; model vulnerability and openness to inspire teams.
