Building a workforce fit for the future

Fiona Miller, Director of People Programmes at IGD

Learning at Work Week highlights the importance and benefits of continual learning and development. This year’s theme is “Create the Future” exploring how lifelong learning at work can help us all personally and collectively create the future.

Our life-long learning approach inspires businesses and supports our industry colleagues throughout their careers, building knowledge and developing capability.

To accelerate efforts to build a workforce fit for the future our learning programmes help businesses in the food and consumer goods industry, attract, develop and thrive.

Attract

Our learning programmes start before employment has even begun. We understand the importance of helping young people to develop essential employability skills early is key to filling the skills gaps impacting our industry.

So, our employability programme helps young people to develop the skills needed to succeed in the world of work while showcases our industry and the breadth of opportunities it has to offer.

The main way we do this is through our school workshops, where participants hear from industry professionals, ranging from CEOs to apprentices, giving advice and insight into the world of work within the food and consumer goods industry. Now in its eighth year, our workshops have trained over 85,000 young people and is the largest programme of its kind in the UK.

Attracting young talent is a vital part of building a productive, inclusive and sustainable future workforce.

Develop

Potential to develop in the workplace is key to the growth of our industry – how else will we  meet the challenges of an ever-changing business climate?

We know learning is not a one-time solution, so our complimentary programme of free and paid for learning programmes equip those in our industry with personal skills and technical capabilities they need at every stage of their career.

With free courses and events to build foundation level skills amongst new to industry and line managment, to workshops to improve ways of working and unlock long-term commercial benefit for both organisations and individuals, our complimentary offering creates a life-long learning journey.

Whether you’re reading this as an individual learner or responsible for the training of a team our learning solutions can be tailored to suit your specific business needs.

Thrive

Lastly, we’re on a mission to create a more inclusive industry by supporting companies to drive positive cultural change.

By working together, we can create a more inclusive workforce, impacting the lives of the millions of people working in our industry.

Our reverse mentoring programme creates a safe and collaborative space for leaders to hear the lived-in experiences of those from under-represented groups. Business leaders can then take these shared learnings back to their businesses and adapt where needed to create inclusive workplaces where everyone can thrive.
