Legal Recruitment Trends: What's on the Horizon for Law Firms
Recruitment activity in the legal sector is in decline, with the hardest affected areas anticipated to be Corporate Law and Merger and Acquisition (M&A) activity. This is due to ongoing economic uncertainty which is driving a reduction in M&A activity, concurrently meaning that fewer transactional lawyers are required.
Looking to the future, there will come a time when we regain a more confident economic footing and law firms wishing to remain at the forefront of the industry will need to prepare for this eventuality. To this end, the recruitment trends that we foresee include:
1. Succession planning.
At present, recruitment activity is focused on short-term gains, but to move forward and prepare for when existing senior associates and partners retire, it is essential that firms begin proactive succession planning. They need to identify where gaps in the workforce are likely to arise and ensure that they have a plan in place for filling them. This may mean recruiting ambitious lower-level associates now to protect against future vacancies.
2. Legal tech.
An increased reliance on legal tech to drive efficiencies and productivity improvements requires that lawyers understand and can easily navigate the software that their firm uses. As legal tech and AI become more commonplace across the industry, staff with strong technical abilities will be in demand.
3. Greater desirability of UK firms.
As the pound continues to strengthen against the dollar, pay disparities between UK and US firms will decrease, driving a renewed interest in working for a UK based firm. Typically offering good bonuses, ongoing development opportunities and greater flexibility, UK law firms are well placed to attract high quality candidates. They may just need to adjust their employer branding to set themselves apart from their US competitors.
4. Generalised skill sets.
It has previously been said that the path to job security is to specialise early, but as hybrid working patterns become more prevalent and clients increasingly need support in cross-discipline areas of law, such as cybersecurity, intellectual property and environmental law, a multi-disciplinary or hybrid approach offers benefits in terms of the ability to secure and convert a greater proportion of leads into clients.

5. Flexible hiring solutions.
Law firms will need to respond proactively to the needs of their clients, and for some, this may mean implementing flexible hiring solutions, such as onboarding temporary staff to fill specialist roles or modifying organisational structures to better align client demand to the talent that is available.
6. Globalisation.
Particularly in areas such as corporate law, it is likely that an increased focus will be levelled at securing talent with overseas experience, drawing on valuable multicultural experience to deliver improved client outcomes.
7. Emotional intelligence.
As AI and legal tech become more prevalent, there will be an increased need for client-facing lawyers to demonstrate excellent interpersonal abilities, empathising with their clients and supporting them in achieving their outcomes. Demonstrating strong soft skills will be essential for lawyers who want to progress in their careers.
Law firms wishing to retain their competitive edge in this challenging recruitment market must stay attuned to ever-evolving trends and adapt their recruitment strategies accordingly. As the socio-economic and political landscapes of the UK continue to evolve, so too will the needs of the legal industry.
Choosing a recruitment partner who can support you in your endeavours, deploy flexible and adaptable hiring strategies and be readily available to discuss your long-term strategy will ease the burden and help you to make the best decisions at the earliest possible point in time.
