LEO at NUS Series – Part 06: Exploring Servant Leadership with Neptali Martinez
🌱Understand Servant Leadership
Professor Martinez: “I have been teaching about leadership for a while, and while I have not focused specifically on “Servant” leadership, good leaders develop their followers, good leaders open doors for others, good leaders don't take credit for the team's achievements, good leaders go to bat for their employees, good leaders don't mandate, they influence.
In all these leadership actions, we can see the “Servant” essence, the “Servant” foundation, and the “Servant” approach to obtain performance from their followers.”
🌱A brief anecdote
Professor Martinez: "The CEO in a large organization decided to cross the entire length of the company's floor to go to the office of one the managers to personally talk to him. Knocking on the office door the CEO asks the manager if he has a few minutes to talk? The surprised manager, after getting over his initial surprise, invites the CEO to enter the office. The CEO asks the manager if he can close the office door. The manager, thinking that he is in trouble, consents to close the door. As the CEO sits across from the manager's desk, he tells the manager, “I have a problem and I need your help to resolve it.
The CEO could have called the manager, could have send an email, could have sent a message, the CEO could have summoned the manager to his office, but instead, showing "Servant" leadership, the CEO went to see the manager personally, to ask for his help.
No orders, no mandates, no deadlines, but to “ask” for the manager’s help."
