A Lesson from COVID19: It’s Time to Get Committed to Preventative Health

A Lesson from COVID19: It’s Time to Get Committed to Preventative Health

I’m sure you’ve heard that people with underlying health issues such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic disease are much more at risk from being adversely affected by the COVID19 virus.

This news is scary, given that six out of ten adults in the US have a chronic disease in the US. Four out of ten have multiple chronic diseases that put them at high risk. In my opinion, the COVID situation is a huge wake-up call to get us focused on preventative health.

Another factor that is on my mind is the shortage of physicians in our country. We already have a shortage of primary care physicians, but this shortage is expected to grow to a magnitude of roughly 130,000 by the year 2025.

Why is this happening at a time when our need for preventative care is growing?

My perspective is that this shortage has to do with insurance and the frustrating (at least for me!) process of dealing with insurance and its limitations.

What can we do about this situation?

Some possible solutions have arisen from conversations I’ve had recently with guests on my podcasts, Mountain Mantras: Wellness and Life Lessons, and Positive on Publishing. I’d like to share these solutions in the form of three “lessons” you’ll read about in this article.

As I wrote about in a previous article on LinkedIn, the world is going through a “paradigm shift”. The shift I wrote about in my April article had to do with relationships and mental wellness, but shifts are also occurring on a broader scale. We are called forward to learn and integrate lessons that inform us on how we want to show up on the other side of this global pandemic.

I want to thank my guests for their insights, detailed below, for uncovering the following three solutions to our global health crisis:

Lesson #1: Allow for “a lab in every home” (Urine testing with guest Christian Chasmer)

Lesson #2: Follow your intuition about your health and seek out a collaborative health model (Lisa Rudy Williams)

Lesson #3: Leverage creativity in your healing process (Sara Connell)

Lesson #1: Allow for “a lab in every home”. (Urine testing with guest Christian Chasmer)

Christian Chasmer is an entrepreneur and operations expert. He is currently a partner and COO at Vessel (VesselHealth.com), which is launching a product that will allow users, for the low cost of just $10 per “test”, to sample urine in the privacy of their own home. These urine cards share what nutrients might be suboptimal, and the company Vessel provides actionable advice on how to optimize nutritional status.

Here are the pertinent “mantras” from his interview:

Mantra #1:  Wellness is about giving people tools, education, and support for behavior change.

Mantra #2: A conscious wellness business is about solving a key problem for a consumer and creating a transformation for them in their lives.

Mantra #3:  Conscious wellness businesses walk the talk. Christian shares how Vessel supports their employees with daily meditation and other wellness and spiritual practices. Mantra #4:  Step away from the desk.  Often our best ideas come in the shower, on a walk, or when we are allowing the space for inspiration to flow.

In summary, Christian shows that we must take our wellness seriously at both an individual and a corporate level. He is walking his talk by getting involved in a company that seeks to put “a lab in every home” and giving power back to the individual to track and be empowered around their health. His company also encourages daily meditation breaks and other steps to maintain a work-life balance.

Lesson #2: Follow your intuition about your health and seek out a collaborative health model. (Lisa Rudy Williams)

Lisa Rudy Williams is a personal coach, biohacking consultant, and alternative health educator. Her mission is to empower individuals to believe in themselves, set a vision for the future, and experiment with open-minded curiosity in every area of their life. Having battled back from the brink of late-stage Lyme disease and other major health challenges, Lisa is uniquely experienced in working with those who are motivated to move ahead with their own journey to better health.

Here are the pertinent “mantras” from her interview:

Mantra #1:  Biohacking starts with our mindset

Mantra #2:  Biohacking includes cool technologies that allow us to increase our energy at the cellular level (mitochondrial support)

Mantra #3:  Biohacking is about following our intuition when it comes to your health.

Mantra #4: We need a collaborative model for optimal health care.

Mantra #5: Biohacking is about making friends with our own bodies, and connecting to our bodies so that we can come into our own power.

Notice the trend as we start to summarize these “mantras” or takeaways? Solving our current health crisis is about each individual feeling inspired and empowered to take control of his or her own health. Change starts with ourselves.

Lesson #3: Leverage creativity in your healing process. (Sara Connell)

Sara Connell is an author and master coach who helps coaches, writers, and entrepreneurs breakout as thought leaders by becoming bestselling authors and in-demand/TEDx speakers.

Here are the pertinent “fun nuggets” from her interview:

Fun nugget #1:  Write that permission slip to yourself that you are good enough to put a book out into the world (or see Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic for a permission slip).

Fun nugget #2:  Your mess is your message, and trust in the benevolence of the universe to turn traumatic experiences into transformational experiences (for yourself and others).

Fun nugget #3: Books can save lives.

Fun nugget #4: There are optimal brain states for creativity (and it is not high-beta!).

Fun nugget #5: Go for the no, then go with the flow!

In summary, tough times call for creative thinking. Sara knows this lesson at a very deep level. Sarah struggled with infertility for many years until her creative solution presented itself: have her mom (successfully) be the surrogate!

Take care of your health and help others. Across the 14 total takeaways from these interviews (in the form of either “mantras” or “fun nuggets”) you see a road map for improving the health crisis from starting to ourselves (empowerment, knowledge, intuition) and then branching out to others (creativity and a collaborative health model).

Thank you for reading. :)
