Lessons I learned From Former Boeing CEO Scott Carson on Leadership

Scott Carson is one of the most respected leaders to come out of Boeing, having led the production of the iconic 787 Dreamliner. He helped steer the company during some of its most prosperous years. What makes his leadership style so effective, though, is not just his technical expertise but his simplicity and clarity as a leader.

When I was 11 years old, I was already obsessed with business, particularly the airline industry (yes, I was a bit of a nerd). So, I took a chance and wrote a letter to Scott Carson, who was the CEO of Boeing Commercial Airlines at the time. To my surprise, he replied.

His response? It was something I still carry with me to this day:

“The simple part is you hire good people and let them do their jobs and, at the same time, recognize that any business starts and ends with the customer. The complex part involves never forgetting the simple rules.”

This one message shaped my approach as an entrepreneur. Over the years, I’ve started multiple businesses, and I’ve seen firsthand how people often try to complicate things. In reality, being a successful leader and entrepreneur boils down to simple but powerful principles. We’re all in the people business—whether it’s customers or employees.

When I started my first business, I tried to embody Scott’s advice, and as a result, my company became one of the Houston Business Journal’s Best Places to Work three years straight.

Here are three things I’ve learned about being a great leader in business:

  1. Lead from the front Leadership is about setting the example, not just giving orders. If you're asking your team to step up, to go the extra mile, or to push through a challenging project, make sure you're showing them you're willing to do the same. This doesn’t mean you need to micromanage every task, but it does mean that when times are tough, you’re visible, engaged, and willing to roll up your sleeves. People follow leaders who are in the trenches with them. Whether it’s closing a deal, solving a customer problem, or navigating a tough decision, lead by example and show that you’re willing to do the hard work, too. It builds trust, loyalty, and sets the standard for the entire team.
  2. Growth is key In business, standing still is essentially moving backward. Growth isn’t just about increasing revenue or adding more clients; it's about ensuring that both the business and your people are evolving. As a leader, you have to be constantly thinking about how to expand, innovate, and challenge the status quo. But it doesn’t stop there—you also need to create an environment where your employees can grow as well. Encourage personal development, offer opportunities for advancement, and make sure your team has the tools they need to succeed. A business that prioritizes growth, both in terms of operations and people, is one that stays competitive and relevant. Remember, if your people aren’t growing, neither is your business.
  3. Listen, then lead One of the easiest traps for leaders is to assume that because you're in charge, you always have to be the one talking. In reality, the best leaders listen more than they speak. The insights and feedback from your team and your customers are invaluable. Take the time to hear their concerns, ideas, and challenges. Create a culture where people feel comfortable speaking up, because often the best solutions come from those on the ground. However, listening doesn’t mean you should ignore your instincts. While you gather input, you’ll also need to make the tough calls. Great leaders have the ability to absorb information and perspectives from their team, but ultimately, they trust their gut when making decisions. It’s that balance between listening and leading that can set your business apart.

Simplicity is the secret weapon that many overlook. If you can distill things down to the basics while everyone else complicates them, you’ll win.
