Lessons I learned From Former Boeing CEO Scott Carson on Leadership
Scott Carson is one of the most respected leaders to come out of Boeing, having led the production of the iconic 787 Dreamliner. He helped steer the company during some of its most prosperous years. What makes his leadership style so effective, though, is not just his technical expertise but his simplicity and clarity as a leader.
When I was 11 years old, I was already obsessed with business, particularly the airline industry (yes, I was a bit of a nerd). So, I took a chance and wrote a letter to Scott Carson, who was the CEO of Boeing Commercial Airlines at the time. To my surprise, he replied.
His response? It was something I still carry with me to this day:
“The simple part is you hire good people and let them do their jobs and, at the same time, recognize that any business starts and ends with the customer. The complex part involves never forgetting the simple rules.”
This one message shaped my approach as an entrepreneur. Over the years, I’ve started multiple businesses, and I’ve seen firsthand how people often try to complicate things. In reality, being a successful leader and entrepreneur boils down to simple but powerful principles. We’re all in the people business—whether it’s customers or employees.
When I started my first business, I tried to embody Scott’s advice, and as a result, my company became one of the Houston Business Journal’s Best Places to Work three years straight.

Here are three things I’ve learned about being a great leader in business:
