Talking to Marcus Lemonis

Lessons I Learned from My Mentor, Marcus Lemonis.

I was blessed with the opportunity to completely fangirl and live out one of my bigger dreams this past week. I got to talk to Marcus Lemonis . I have been watching/following Marcus for over eight years. The realness, wisdom, and strategy he brings to business owners is pretty amazing. You can see him in action on his show The Profit which aired on CNBC.

This past week, I attended the Idea Collective Small Business Conference in Lake Geneva, WI. It was after a rough week of family emergencies and a cross-country trip at the spur of the moment. Compound that with this year and all of the twists, turns, and stretching that has occurred both personally and professionally this year, and I was honestly pretty primed for the wisdom and affirmation I received from Marcus Lemonis on Friday morning.

See Marcus was our keynote speaker, but in a completely different way. I was able to ask him a question and hear from him personally on the spot! How cool is that!?

I asked him, "As a business owner and mentor of highly successful businesses, how do you continue to stay motivated and continue to show up despite all of the demands? Sometimes I feel like there is no way I could ever be the person that becomes highly successful because I often feel like such a mess."

Yep, I feel like a complete mess a lot of the time. It probably has to do with the constant demands from clients, employees, family, and being a single mom to four children. Nonetheless, it's been tough this year. I have felt incompetent, and unmotivated as the overwhelm (which is really growth in disguise) has been a big theme for me this year. A definite shift happened though, when I heard my billion-dollar, successful mentor tell me that it was pretty normal and expected to feel this way sometimes.

During these rough moments this year, I have leaned into the responsibility of my role often. Hearing him encourage the same, lets me know that I'm on the right path and that when I feel like not enough, I actually am. I was also reminded that my biggest job isn't being a business owner, it's being present and available for my kids.

I talked to Marcus for 5 minutes but I learned so much. I learned so much about me. I learned in the aftermath that I am not alone and that my courage for even asking the question, is motivational and inspirational for others. I learned (or rather was reminded) that business ownership is hard and if I act like everything has been easy and effortless... I'm really just being disingenuous. It's truly ok to not be ok all of the time.

I think my biggest lesson from Marcus was a realization that being real, transparent, and honest about the journey can do more good than hours and hours of amazing content. Through Marcus being willing to share with me his own struggles and moments of disbelief, I can keep pushing forward and therefore, the ripple effect of success, motivation, and change continues.

This has led me to revise my goals for this next year. Instead of it being a revenue goal, I am going to go for impact, because I want to be like Marcus. I want to help and empower owners beyond monetary success. Money of course is an important part of success, but what's truly important is empowering owners to prioritize what is important for them.

So my 2024 goal is to help and empower 1,000 owners to be successful in their business by their numbers. We are going to go for profit and revenue but more importantly, we are going to strive to change lives through successful and sustainable business ownership.
