Lessons for Nigeria: From Saudi Arabia and the UK.

Lessons for Nigeria: From Saudi Arabia and the UK.

My extraordinary medical career of 2 decades across three continents and three countries has birthed an exciting project that compares the healthcare sector in these countries.

The big question is -

How does this improve the healthcare sector in Nigeria?

Please take a peek at our exciting new project! This is a work in progress.

Nigeria's Healthcare Sector:

Investment:

Nigeria invests about 3% of its GDP in the health sector, showing its commitment to improving healthcare services.

Insurance Coverage:

In 2018, approximately 97% of Nigerians did not have health insurance, indicating a need for expanded healthcare coverage.

Health Threats:

Malaria is a significant health threat in Nigeria, and the country's maternal mortality rates are among the highest on the continent, highlighting the urgent need for improved maternal healthcare services.

Infrastructure:

The healthcare system in Nigeria is a shared responsibility of the three tiers of government and involves significant private sector participation, showcasing a diverse approach to healthcare service delivery.

Saudi Arabia's Healthcare Sector:

Investment:

Saudi Arabia accounts for 60% of the GCC healthcare expenditure and plans to invest $66 billion in healthcare infrastructure by 2030, demonstrating a solid commitment to advancing healthcare services.

Efficiency:

The percentage of patients receiving emergency medical care within 4 hours increased from 26% in 2016 to 87% in 2020, indicating significant improvements in emergency healthcare services.

Digitalization:

The healthcare sector in Saudi Arabia has made significant strides in digital healthcare, with millions of appointments being booked through apps like "Mawid," showcasing the integration of technology in healthcare delivery.

Vision 2030:

Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 aims to increase private sector participation in healthcare from 40% to 65% by 2030, signaling a shift towards increased private sector involvement in healthcare services.

UK's Healthcare Sector:

Expenditure:

In 2020, the UK's healthcare expenditure amounted to £257.6 billion, which equates to 12% of its GDP, indicating a substantial financial commitment to healthcare services.

NHS:

The UK's National Health Service (NHS) provides free healthcare at the point of use for all legal residents, demonstrating the country's dedication to universal healthcare access.

Workforce:

Each UK country publishes official statistics on the directly employed NHS workforce, reflecting the devolved nature of healthcare and the importance of regional healthcare management.

Private Sector:

Alongside the NHS, the UK also offers an optional, faster-access private sector, providing individuals with choices for their healthcare needs.

These insights provide a comprehensive understanding of the distinct features and current challenges of the healthcare sectors in Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and the UK, highlighting the diversity in investment, infrastructure, insurance coverage, and government initiatives across these countries.
