Lest we forget - the MIA fought to keep lawyers under the yoke of dual regulation!
It should never be forgotten that the President of the Sydney based migration agents' lobby group (MIA) fought tooth and nail to prevent the freeing of Immigration Lawyers from the yoke of OMARA and of a secondary layer of regularity burden, he the President of that illustrious group, in fact, wrote an article in which he dismissed the ending of the dual regulatory burden as merely satisfying nothing more than the "professional pride of some in the legal profession".
The fact I am an officer of the High Court and admitted to practice in the State of Victoria and South Australia as a Solicitor & Barrister: a legal practitioner, is a great source of pride, and it is also why I am perplexed by my fellow legal practitioners who trade this honor or privilege so cheaply.
Why do some immigration solicitors continue to do the bidding or allow their privileged position to be coopted to advance the interest of a club - a club that has a board with an history of putting the interest of lawyers second to that of migration agents and is hostile toward immigration lawyers.
Perhaps it is Stockholm syndrome?
Anyway for those who have forgotten what the Sydney based migration agents' lobby group did in their fight to stop deregulation here are some links. (So be Proud you need not be a second class member of a group that uses you only to enhance their brand.)
The last thing I would say to all my fellow immigration lawyers is join a group that respect you! Join the Law Council of Australia or the Law Institute of your state. And for more bang for your compliance buck - join the Victorian Immigration Solicitors' Alliance: VISA.

2yYou seem happy with your position and that is great but the fact that the board of the MIA tried to prevent the end of dual regulation to the detriment of refugees & migrants and the fact they (the MIA board) consistently put the clubs bottom-line before the interest of migrants and refugees is something worth reminding those not yet completely under the sway of the Sydney based migration agents' lobby group. If you ever do want to be treated as an equal - do yourself a favor - and join VISA.
