Let's Make This Your Day One
Back-to-school is here! This year, I got to take my first chalkboard photo and I was feeling all the emotions – excited, nervous, happy, sad…you name it. But an interesting one hit me after we dropped my son off at his new “school” – jealousy.
See while he’s on a new adventure & getting a fresh start with new teachers, classmates and experiences – I went back to my same old routine. This made me realize – as adults we don’t get many fresh starts or clean slates. Perhaps if you move or change jobs you do but for the most part, what we did yesterday or the day before or the day before that carries with us.
I see this a lot in the financial advising work that I do – I’ll have a get-to-know you conversation with someone and the past regrets, poor decisions and bad advice still carries with them. I see embarrassment and shame. I hear “I should have done this…” or “I shouldn’t have done that…” Unfortunately, we don’t get a clean slate with our money.
However, in these conversations I always say – this is your Day One. Everything that happened previously has gotten you to this point. We are no longer looking backwards – from here on out, we only look forward. It’s now time to learn from and correct past mistakes, to build on what you’re doing right, and to get on track to living your best life.
There are 4 months left in 2024 which means there is still time to make this your year of making smart money moves.
I’m ready if you are.
Let’s make today your Day One.
