Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) STUDENT OF THE YEAR
I am not typically one to ask for charitable donations of friends, family, and colleagues but this is one that is near and dear to my heart, especially this year, so I am going to break one of my rules. I do apologize if you have already received a letter, Facebook message or email. PLEASE DO NOT FEEL PRESSURED AND I KNOW THAT SOME OF YOU HAVE ALREADY DONATED. The work that LLS does is very important to me and my family for reasons you will read below and now that my daughter, Regan, is running for “Student of the Year” for LLS it makes it doubly important. Since many of you are already generous enough to give to LLS please do so this year through my daughter’s campaign. If you are searching for a charity to honor this year, this is one of the best and I ask you to please consider supporting this campaign. Feel free to forward on to your family and friends if you BELIEVE in this cause. Please read the letter from my daughter below…
Dear Friends and Family,
This year my friend and I have been given an amazing opportunity to run for Student of the Year for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).
As some of you may know my dad comes from a large family of nine kids. Many years ago, his oldest brother, Michael went to the hospital with severe abdomen pain and the doctors found a tumor. The following day he had emergency surgery to remove not only the tumor, but his appendix, part of his colon and many lymph nodes. Three days later he was diagnosed with a rare cancer called Mantle Cell Lymphoma at the age of 33 with a wife and four young kids. His doctor told Michael he highly recommended very aggressive treatment if he wanted to live. The doctor recommended a bone marrow transplant which involved six weeks of full body radiation and chop chemo prior to the bone marrow transplant. At the time, a bone marrow transplant had only a 30% survival rate if the donor wasn’t a family member, but a 70% survival rate if the donor was a family member. Luckily, since he had such a large family one of his brothers was a perfect match and was able to be a bone marrow donor for him. He had to stay in the hospital for three months recovering from the transplant. Michael is now 56 years old and has been cancer free for 22 years!
Without everyone's financial support of LLS the funding for the research for treatments like his would not have been available, along with financial assistance available to families in need.
Today I am asking you to help support the mission of LLS in their effort to find a cure for blood cancer and help families, friends, and patients going through what Michael and his family went through. LLS was a major financial contributor to Michael's medical expenses. LLS has funded 55 out of the 65 FDA approved treatments since 2017. More than 40% of blood cancer treatments funded by LLS have been used to treat other cancers such as ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, brain cancer, and breast cancer.
The LLS Student of the Year campaign is seven weeks long (March 4th - April 22nd) and it teaches the candidates professional lifelong skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing, and project management in order to raise funds for LLS. My team's goal is to raise 15,000 dollars by April 22nd.
