Life Begins at 30: The Triangle That Connects Skills, Capacity, and Opportunity

Life Begins at 30: The Triangle That Connects Skills, Capacity, and Opportunity

Introduction: A Wake-Up Call for Change Life begins when you take charge of your mindset, and for many, this realization comes after years of working in systems that don’t serve them. Whether you’re a young professional wondering, “What’s next?” or someone stuck in the 9-to-5 grind, there’s a way to break free: transitioning from a mentality of chasing to an attracting mentality. My framework—a triangle connecting skillscapacity, and opportunity—comes in here.

I spent the past three years refining this concept, inspired by my passion for helping people unlock their full potential. This triangle is a guide for those ready to shift their focus, redefine success, and become magnets for opportunities.

Recently, I received a book that helped crystalize this thought I've been nurturing for the past year. I'd like to thank Pat Lynes for sharing The Disrupted Executive: How to Move from a Permanent Executive to a Portfolio Way of Working. The insights in this book inspired me to reflect further on the importance of transitioning mindsets to unlock new opportunities.

The Triangle: Skills, Capacity, and Opportunity

At the centre of the triangle is trust. Trust in yourself and the trust you build with others. Surrounding it are three interconnected pillars:

  1. Opportunity: From Push to Pull Most people live in a constant state of chase. They send endless applications, pitch ideas to disinterested audiences, and hustle until they burn out. But there’s another way: become so valuable that opportunity comes to you.
  2. Capacity: Give More Than You Take The most underrated step to success is focusing on giving, not taking. When you mentor, coach, or advise others, you not only create value but also sharpen your skills and build dependency.
  3. Skills: Branding to Be Visible You may have exceptional skills, but if no one knows about them, you’re invisible. Your personal brand highlights your expertise and makes you stand out.

Challenges on the Journey

While the triangle offers a clear path, challenges will arise:

  1. Networking: It’s not always easy to meet the right people or build meaningful connections. But the key is consistency and genuine engagement.
  2. Being Visible: It can feel uncomfortable to put yourself out there. Overcome this by focusing on the value you’re providing to others, not on yourself.

Solutions exist for these challenges: leverage social platforms, participate in industry events, and connect with people through mentoring or collaboration.

A New Beginning: Life at 30 (Or Any Age)

The phrase "Life begins at 30" isn’t about age; it’s about mindset. It’s about embracing this triangle to transition from scarcity to abundance, from chasing opportunities to attracting them.

Practical Steps to Start:

  1. Identify the skills you want to highlight.
  2. Build capacity by mentoring, coaching, or volunteering.
  3. Focus on attracting opportunities by sharing your value authentically.

The truth is, this journey isn’t linear. You may struggle with visibility, question your worth, or face rejection. But if you trust the process and build trust with others, you’ll discover opportunities you never thought possible.

Conclusion: The Light Is Always On Your journey doesn’t stop when you reach the top; it evolves. By connecting skills, capacity, and opportunity, you become a beacon for growth, impact, and fulfilment. The triangle is a simple concept, but its power lies in your ability to take action.

The light—your visibility, your impact—is always on. You just need to make sure others can see it.

Are you ready to begin?
