A life full of Micro-Missions

The rich life of Amin Lakhani as I knew him

This day I say goodbye to a friend who motivated, inspired and encouraged me in so many ways in the early years of our lives. Dr. Amin Lakhani returned to his creator and today we hand over his physical body to Lord Almighty.

I have so many great friends from my teenage years and onwards and thank God almost all of them are present somewhere on this universe. I wish and pray I don’t have to write such a good bye note to any one of them ever. While we may not be living next to each other, we are still close at heart with each other and connected in some mysterious way across thousands of miles.

Dr. Amin Lakhani was such a friend. For the last couple of decades we were geographically apart but always in presence of each other in a very interesting way. We all have such relationships. Those who are present on this earth, not in front of your eyes, but the comfort in your heart that they are there. Dr. Amin Lakhani’s life was a mosaic or rather a garden of hundreds of micro-missions.

As Amin was growing up, almost every single day of his life, as I knew it and observed, had some mission on his agenda. Whether it was a student needing assistance with a college admission, a family needing support with some economic matters, young people needing guidance on social habits, parents needing advice on assisting their children with religious upbringing and so much more. His missions were unending and his success rate was outstanding. For me, it was a daily dose of inspiration and motivation to see how he was able to identify needs of people, how he took up those missions in his life and how he actually worked hard to complete those jobs. There are many many instances that I know of and remember him undertaking as a young man of 18, 19, 20 or 21 or 22 years. He grew up with missions, micro-missions if you look at them from outside but huge missions for those whose lives were being impacted.

I had the opportunity to work with him on many social projects as we were growing up together as friends, along with many other friends. Amin and I once co-authored a play “Ruh Aur Nafs” where we both acted along with another friend. I had the honor of working with this great soul on this project where we were invited to perform at several other venues besides our local community, Nizari, where we launched it first. His care, love and concern for members of the community was just a remarkable motivation for me and I am sure for others around him.

At one time, in his very early 20s he took up the mission to spread the message on the harmful effects of cigarette smoking to the community members in the whole city. This was a very non-traditional topic, extremely unusual topic to be picked up for a Waez in the community center. He went through all the hoops and processes to get special approval to deliver this topic. Once again, I along with others, had the honor of supporting this great soul in his mission to spread the message against smoking. While we supported his beautiful micro-missions we were also motivated and encouraged to take up missions in our lives.

I had the opportunity of witnessing so many of his micro-missions in his life, I am sure there are numerous lives that have changed because of his presence on this earth. Even in recent years whenever I had a chance to connect with him during my trips to Toronto, I would hear of his ongoing micro-missions. I learned that even years later, this beautiful soul never stopped changing the world, one family, one life at a time with his creative micro-missions.

“Die happily and look forward to taking up a new and better form. Like the sun, only when you set in the west can you rise in the east.”                        ― Rumi

God must have better plans for him, otherwise he was a great asset on this earth. I hope God continues to bless his family with lots of strength and patience. I am sure his children will continue the legacy of their father of serving selflessly and serving to make a difference in lives of others around us.

God Bless the Beautiful Soul of Dr. Amin Lakhani and may God Bless the family with continuous divine protection forever.
