Life is Traffic...Awake to Your Wake...The End of Accidents...and more

My mission is to help leaders make a difference. A Vistage peer group is an excellent way to work toward that goal. In addition, I share ideas and resources through this newsletter to allow all leaders to Make A Difference. Enjoy the resources of my MAD newsletter.

Life is Traffic

In a recent post, Seth Godin looks at something we all experience: traffic… and points out that many of the mistakes we make on the road are often duplicated in other areas of our lives.  See if his list of “Traffic Metaphors” resonates with you.  The Last Pandemic

The Last Pandemic

During a 2015 TED Talk, Microsoft founder Bill Gates warned that at some point a pandemic was inevitable and that we weren’t ready for it. To be sure, we’ve learned a lot over the past two years that will be useful if there is another pandemic and most experts believe there surely will be. But Gates says we need to take those lessons and build organizations that will mitigate the effects of what comes after Covid.

Drawing a parallel to Roman Emperor Augustus' creation of the first fire department, he says that if we act now We Can Make Covid-19 the Last Pandemic.

California Dreamin’ 2.0

Leaders are looking for ways to attract talent; higher pay, work from home and day one benefits are increasingly common. Some are experimenting with offering a shorter work week….and if California has its way you won’t have a choice; a 32-work week will become law, with no cut in pay.

Whether it becomes law or not, Vistage’s HR speaker Hunter Lott helps Vistage members think through questions like this and he’ll help you too with this 5-minute video, The 32 Hour Work Week.

This CNBC article will provide additional detail on the 32-hour work week proposal and additional links with more information.

Are You Awake to Your Wake?

A Vistage speaker once said, “We invite CEOs into Vistage and human beings show up.” Vistage Speaker Dr. Bill Crawford reminds us that “Our emotional wake is how we affect others after we have left the room.” How big, or bad, is the wake you leave for your teams to swim through? Dr. Crawford may help you answer the question What is Your Emotional Wake?  See if your team agrees.

The End of Accidents?

The word ‘accident’ usually implies a negative event that was neither deliberate nor planned; nothing could have been done to prevent whatever loss ensued.

However, author Jesse Singer in a new book. There are No Accidents, argues “that basically everything we consider to be an “accident”…..are in fact not accidents at all. Humans….make mistakes all the time, but it’s the dangerous conditions in our built environments that result in fatal consequences.”

Singer offers a short overview of his book in a short article on Vox in which he suggests we start by Stop Calling Them ‘Accidents’.

No Recession Here

Dr. Alan Beaulieu of ITR Economics advises Don’t Let Anyone Talk You Into A Recession, suggesting instead that a soft landing is more likely. Brian Beaulieu follows up with a podcast (and transcript) on how to maximize profits when the economy slows down (i.e., still growing, just slower). Check out No Signs of a Recession.

We just bought our 2nd Tesla. It navigates the traffic on the freeway. So much of being productive and finding harmony is finding automation in your life. If you follow things like Atomic Habits, and program things, such as paying your self first with exercise (put it in your calendar) you can better navigate the traffic of life.
