Before you know it, you find yourself at the culmination of your journey, confronted by the harsh reality that life has completed its full circle.  The silver years, marked by wisdom and experience, bring forth valuable lessons in moderation, humility, and a more subdued way of life. You observe friends who were once relentless in their pursuit of success and power, are now compelled to adapt and amend their ways due to unforeseen circumstances. Life imparts its share of bitter lessons, and that boundless energy, dynamism, aggression, and resentment give way to forces beyond their control. The smoker turns into a preacher, the angry soul evolves into a sage, and the once indolent transforms into a zealous racehorse/   From the depths of the heart, a multitude of experiences and stories emerge as you reflect on the brevity of life's journey. The Sudden Loss that Sparked a Family's Rise:

A typical day took an unexpected turn when a colleague tragically collapsed and passed away before reaching the hospital. His children, still in college, were left without a means of support, and the family had no resources to perform the last rites. However, the kindness of strangers filled the void, and a remarkable transformation ensued. The shock of losing their sole breadwinner ignited a fierce determination in all three sons to succeed. Under the guidance of their mother, they persevered and, within five years, surpassed all expectations, excelling in their careers. Two of them even ascended to the position of 'CEO.' The once-devastated family found hidden strength within themselves, leading many to wonder if the untimely loss had ultimately been a blessing in disguise.

The High Cost of a Lifelong Habit

Another colleague, who had long been a heavy smoker with no breaks between puffs, had completed his academic journey and retired to his son's home. Unfortunately, his relentless smoking caught up with him, leading to a diagnosis of cancer. Hospitalized and placed on a ventilator, his prolonged stay in the ICU drained his son and daughter-in-law's savings, rendering them penniless. Desperate, they sought help and were forced to make a heart-wrenching decision. They reached out to a friend for assistance in convincing their mother to withdraw the ventilator support to save their finances. The decision was made, and the colleague passed away within a day. His final moments were agonizing, and he repeatedly acknowledged that his self-inflicted wounds merited neither attention nor sympathy.

During his working years, he commanded a tremendous amount of respect and admiration from countless people. However, as he neared the end of his life, especially after losing his companion, he was left alone and neglected. The heartbreaking conclusion to the life of this remarkable gentleman left those who knew him in disbelief and sadness.

He had countless dark facets to his personality but remained in denial, instead blaming others for not making him obscenely rich.  He had no kind words for anyone, even those who had aided his rise from humble beginnings. He left no stone unturned in taking advantage of his family, going so far as to exploit them for his own gain. He hastily entered a marriage, solely for financial gain, and subsequently callously abandoned his wife. Later, he married again and appeared to care for his two children genuinely. However, as they grew and established their lives abroad, they displayed the courage to come out of their shell.   When he fell seriously ill while visiting his son overseas, he was unceremoniously cast out of his son's house. He had to return to his homeland in a dire condition, without medical assistance. As time passed, his behavior grew increasingly unbearable for his wife, who ultimately declared that she could no longer live with him. His children, who had witnessed his ill-treatment of their mother and his unscrupulous conduct, refused to support him when he became paralyzed.  In the end, he was evicted from the house he had purchased with ill-gotten gains/hard-earned money, I do not know of course, and was left with no choice but to enter an old-age home. During his final days, not a soul was willing to engage with him, let alone visit him. The very children whose education, professional growth, and weddings he had funded turned their backs on him, unwilling to spare even a minute for a phone call. It seemed that his relentless pursuit of wealth through unethical means and his abusive behavior had finally caught up with him, offering him a bitter taste of the consequences of a life filled with greed and cruelty.

Betrayed Trust: A Heart-Wrenching Tale of Elderly Parents Abandoned

This story recounts a harrowing experience of an acquaintance, making it one of the most distressing accounts imaginable. The parents, during their son's tenure in Delhi, visited his apartment, where both he and his daughter-in-law treated them with great warmth. As a deeply religious family, the parents were delighted to witness their daughter-in-law's loving and considerate behavior, and they became convinced that this would be their sanctuary in their later years. They had property, modest savings, and post-retirement government funds at their disposal, offering a comfortable financial cushion. When the son extended an invitation for them to reside with him, their hearts swelled with joy, believing that their final days would be filled with happiness.  With unwavering trust in their son's compassion, they sold their assets, converted them into cash, and transferred their entire post-retirement savings to his account, without concern for the uncertain future. Immediately after retiring, they moved into their son's home. Yet, within a mere two weeks, the daughter-in-law's true colors began to surface. She demonstrated a complete intolerance for the presence of the elderly couple, whether it was in the dining hall, the front room, or even on the balconies. Frequent arguments ensued, leaving a bitter taste in their mouths, while the son remained a silent witness to the verbal abuse.  Within a month, the daughter-in-law, with heartlessness, demanded that they find a place for themselves anywhere other than her home. Stranded without shelter, funds, or friends in an unfamiliar place, they faced the added challenge of lacking language skills to communicate effectively in the local dialect. Plagued by distress and unable to come to terms with the situation, they were compelled to pack their belongings and begin life anew in their hometown. They were forced to leave everything behind and return empty-handed.   Regrettably, their life concluded in profound suffering, shock, and abject conditions. This painful account serves as a stark reminder of the importance of familial bonds and the devastating consequences of misplaced trust and betrayal.

We must take responsibility for our silver years, striving for self-sufficiency and tempering the expectations of family. Invest now in your health and independence, so your sunset days are not spent infirm and dependent.  Remember, our children are not meant to be lifelong nurses. They have their own lives and dreams to nurture. It is unrealistic to expect them to hold our hand at every turn, even if they wish they could.  So we must plan and prepare for our own futures. Save diligently, invest wisely, and stand sturdily on your own two feet. With financial security comes the courage and freedom to rely on no one.  Build relationships without expectations, and you will be rewarded with bonds that withstand the tests of time. In the end, we share responsibility for a society where the aged are cherished. Each generation must open their hearts, and work together for a more compassionate future.
