Extreme Overclocking with Liquid Nitrogen – AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series

In the spirit of trying out new things in the lab in our review of the AMD Threadripper 7000 Series HEDT and Workstation CPUs, we decided that stopping at water-cooled overclocking was not extreme enough for the StorageReview lab, so we brought in some friends and decided to get cold, -195c cold. We wanted to see what a nice overclock and a couple of pours of liquid nitrogen could do to help push these chips to the edge without destroying them along the way. While all the standard nerds are cuddled in for the night, the StorageReview team and friends are pouring liquid nitrogen all over our AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series casually crushing extreme performance. Full report coming soon. For now, emerge yourself in our vapors.

Nimbus Data has been producing all-flash arrays for many years, then they made the arguably insane leap to jam 100TB of flash in a 3.5” SATA SSD. Now they’ve got another unique storage twist, the ExaDrive Go, which was on display at SC23 last week. This is a 16TB 2.5” SATA SSD available in a bunch of colors, but the kicker is, it has a USB C port integrated so the drive doubles as a portable SSD. We’ve been talking a lot about “Sneaker Net” lately, and this drive looks like a lot of fun potentially for that class of data transfer.

Submer can get more cooling out of their solutions by moving fluid faster over the CPU heatsink with a pair of small fans. It’s called forced convection single-phase cooling.

Our 45Drives (45HomeLab) HL15 unit came in today and one thing we really love out of the gate are the little retainer clips on the HDD bays. Holds the drives snug during insertion. If a HDD slips or gets dropped, they prevent damage to the backplane. We’ve totally never done that and destroyed a SATA/SAS port.
