The little things in life that do matter
I started my day this morning getting up before the ring of my alarm. The sun rises later these days so I cannot rely on it to wake me in the Fall and Winter. I contemplated for a few seconds about getting up or waiting for the alarm to give me the nudge to get out of bed. I rested my eyes for a few more minutes before finally getting the official notice to GET UP.
I carefully navigate across the room in the dark to not wake my partner. And like many, I start my day looking at myself in the mirror. Before grabbing my toothbrush, I take a pause and acknowledge myself. I see myself and take a few breathes to connect with the present.
These days I have been feeling quite energized in the mornings, despite it being dark and cold. As I am done getting dressed and freshening up for the day, my partner wakes up and I immediately start my happy dance.
Ah YES! The day has begun!
Though I have a busy day ahead of me for work and evening plans, I am excited to start my morning slowly and in my own way.
When I was younger, I used to dread the mornings. Long commutes to work meant waking up earlier. And I was often getting less than 7 hours of sleep because I would be up too late. To be honest, I didn't prioritize sleep and rest as highly as I do today.
There's nothing that a cup of coffee can't fix right?
I've also been cutting back on my caffeine intake. I used to rely on coffee to feel alert and stimulated. It was often a bonus to get free coffee at work. Who could say no to that?
Today I am not wanting stimulation. I am craving a rested state of mind. To slow down. To become more aware of what is immediately in front of me and the feelings that I am experiencing. To feel at peace.

I know my day will be busy later today, BUT my morning will be protected.
I like to start my days doing at least 1 thing I enjoy. Whether that is writing, reading, getting outside, or playing a few tunes on my guitar. Each day can be different.
I do not want to feel rushed. I want to start my day in my own way.
The best thing is, we can honour this with just a few minutes each morning. We can choose to start the day intentionally. We can choose to not be rushed.
What do you do in the mornings to bring you joy?

1moI kept trying to read before bed, but would always fall asleep. Now I try to take 5-15 minutes to read in the morning before work. It helps me enjoy my mornings more and I find I can focus more on the book!
