#LiveFromExcell - Using the Power of Storytelling and Conversations to Transform Your Life with Tucker Bryant, Poet & Keynote Speaker

Today’s episode is the first of its kind. I’ve invited my first guest host and shero Stephanie Foster, In The Suite - to interview the multi-talented Tucker Bryant at this year's Carson Excell conference in Las Vegas. Stephanie is a startup executive and advisor, an ETA (electronic transactions association 40 under 40 honoree) and a previous guest.

We feel so lucky and honored to have Tucker Bryant In the Suite! Tucker is an award-winning poet and keynote speaker who left his full-time job as a Product Marketing Manager in Google to help individuals explore the connection between poetic thinking and creative leadership to live a healthier, more fulfilled life.

Tucker's stories have garnered millions of views online and featured at multiple organizations, including TEDx. He has also shared the stage with several successful business people, including Mark Cuban, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, and NASA Director Michelle Thaller. He's also had the privilege of sharing a stage with founders and executives from companies like Twitter, Amazon, McDonald's, and Walgreens.

Let’s rewind Tucker’s story from the beginning.

Tucker was raised in England and went on to study International Relations at the highly regarded Stanford University in the US. Upon graduation, he got a full-time job at Google where he grew to become the Product Marketing Manager.

Having spent over a decade on the campuses of Stanford University and Google, Tucker observed that the corporate world was uncomfortable accessing the creative part of their thought process to bring about innovation.

He firmly believes that if we don’t tap into our creativity, we will eventually disengage from our work and stunt our potential to lead.

As a result, Tucker delivers hybrid presentations using performance poetry as a springboard to inspire people to tear down their comfort zones and develop perspectives they otherwise wouldn't. Tucker's poetic and story-based approach is unexpected and powerful. His thoughtful fusion of art with actionable insights and processes really engages the audience's creativity, helping to prompt decisions that can change their lives.

Tucker credits much of his success to his mother, teachers, and mentors for nurturing his passion for language, and literature. He admitted that although he grew up with the mentality of ticking off the 'boxes of achievement,' his mindset changed as he discovered the art. He learned that words are powerful and leaders must master how and when to use them.

From his first stage fright to competitions and audience participation, Tucker has come a long way. He has helped unlock the doors to innovation and given voice to uncomfortable topics such as depression and substance abuse.

Today's episode with Tucker is a masterclass in itself. Despite his interesting teaching approach based on introspection, he left his audience golden tips on becoming better storytellers.

Below are the top takeaways:

  1. Creative Pursuit Can Be Learned: Most people believe that creativity is something we're born with or without. Conversely, Tucker believes that as long as you're willing to work hard and dedicate yourself to the craft, you can hone it.
  2. Emotions And Goals: It’s important to have a goal and an emotion tied to your story because they will motivate those listening and create a sense of shared feelings between the speaker and the audience. Without these, your story will feel loose, unintentional and unfocused.
  3. Use One-Liners: To help people remember your speech, Tucker recommends taking your most important insights and figuring out how to deliver them as one-liners using any of the four rhetorical tactics. Smart one-liners will have a bigger impact on your audience long after you step away from the stage.
  4. Get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable: It is often difficult to find space and time to do something creative in the hustle and bustle of life. But those who are most successful at it are typically the ones who can motivate themselves to create, even when they don't feel like it. Tucker argues that accepting this challenge will lead you to success.

I always enjoy waking up with a cup of coffee, sweetened with a “ boost from Tina Powell “ with her amazing podcast but this one is supercharged with the amazing Stephanie F. and Tucker Bryant that transcended my aspirations for this particular podcast. Tucker Bryant made a mention of JFK’s powerful line “ Ask not what your country can do for you but , What you can do for your country” , that when I heard his speech, it truly reasonated with my young mind. This podcast is cerebral and intentional as my focus and purpose everyday in my mission Lifelogixs Strategic Consultancy Group in the work that we do ,starts with our belief that “ We all do well, when we all do good” and this podcast made me feel wonderful on so many levels. Thank you again for all that you do Tina Powell and Happy Holidays to you and yours!
