Living Well With Dementia – Have You Downloaded Our Latest Guide?
Are you caring for someone living with Dementia? If so, I want you to know that you’re not alone and I understand the challenges you’re facing. I have lived experience helping to support my Mum for over six years living at home with Vascular Dementia.
I moved back home to live with Mum in 2014. Mum was living alone at home having lost my Dad in 2006, and I started to get calls every day asking me to visit her, she was lonely, very anxious and scared. Although Mum had carers visiting daily morning and evening, this just wasn’t enough for her, so I moved back home to be with her.
The next 6 years proved to be a roller coaster for us, there were lots of precious moments and laughter and also lots of tears, sleepless nights and exhaustion.
There were times when we were told Mum had given up on life because she refused to eat and drink, hospital admissions due to falls and infections and times when she would be awake all night and then sleep all day.
Mum’s illness meant she could be sweet and loving in one moment and cruel in the next. As a carer for a loved one living with dementia, it could be very lonely.
I learnt so much during those years, and recognising that there was a lack of resources, and also having been asked to write a guide like this by various care professionals –
‘I wrote a new guide called Living Well with Dementia, designed as a holistic resource to help others also caring for someone living with dementia.
My guide includes
I am a firm believer that for people living with dementia:
‘Behind every behaviour there is a feeling
Recommended by LinkedIn
And beneath each feeling is a need
And when we meet the need rather than focussing on the behaviour,
we begin to deal with the cause and not the symptom’
And always remember –
‘Don’t approach the challenges that come along with dementia with dread.
Instead, think positive and find a solution.’
