Long-duration energy storage

Long-duration energy storage

When I was a kid, I thought batteries were cool (#nerd). But until recently, most of us, if we thought of batteries at all, considered them to be pretty boring. Now, with the surging popularity of electric vehicles, batteries are cool all over again. We are entering a golden age of innovation in battery chemistry. We need this innovation, because energy storage will be a key element of the electrification and decarbonization of our economy.

Long-duration energy storage (LDES)--systems that can provide at least 10 hours of stored energy--will be needed to enhance reliability in power grids as they integrate growing amounts of intermittent renewable energy resources such as solar and wind. When charged from clean sources, LDES can also enable clean heat for industrial processes. And it can provide clean backup power for remote and off-grid mines, data centers, buildings, and farms, among other applications. For some entities, now may be an excellent time to evaluate and pilot LDES. Indeed, a growing number are already doing so.

We waited to get solar panels until we could get battery storage as well. Much more utility from local energy generation when batteries are included in the system.

I’m with David Schatsky - batteries are cool. (And pretty critical to the #energytransition )
