Long-lost cousins reunited after 45 years

A routine coffee break at Bromford’s Chipping Sodbury office turned into a heart-warming family reunion for two colleagues who discovered their long-lost connection after more than 40 years apart.

Julie Williams, Cleaning Services Team Leader, was grabbing a drink when she noticed a familiar face. Steve Downing, Neighbourhood and Community Manager, was showing new Neighbourhood Coach, Anita Perks, around the office when the unexpected reunion occurred.

Upon introduction, Julie and Anita recognised each other instantly. To their astonishment, Julie realised that Anita was her long-lost cousin. The two women, separated by decades and distance, were reunited in the unlikeliest of places.

Estranged due to family circumstances, Anita had grown up without knowledge of her extended family. For 45 years, she had no contact with her relatives.

Reflecting on the reunion, Julie said, “I’m thrilled to have met Anita again and to answer so many questions she had about our family. Sharing photos of her mother, who she lost contact with at a young age, was particularly special. Unfortunately, I couldn’t reconnect her with my mother, who passed away in November 2023. Mum always wondered about Anita.

“I have positive flashbacks of the day we reunited at the office coffee machine. I’m thankful to Bromford for making this possible. It’s comforting to know that Anita now has the family bond she missed most of her life.”

Anita shared her feelings on joining Bromford and the surprise reunion, “Leaving a 21-year career was a big decision, but Bromford came highly recommended by others. My interview confirmed their positive reviews—it was friendly, welcoming, and relaxed. Without hesitation, I accepted the Neighbourhood Coach role.

“From day one, I’ve been surrounded by support and kindness. I feel appreciated and valued here. Even on challenging days, I don’t regret my decision. Sorry Bromford, it looks like you’re stuck with me.”

As Julie and Anita exchanged stories and memories, they found comfort in their shared history. Their story highlights the importance of connection and belonging. Thanks to Bromford, two long-lost cousins now have the chance to rebuild their relationship and create new memories together.
