A look into the future: China Tech scene 2024
I was scanning the inaugural 2024 Fortune China 500 List (财富中文网) of top Chinese companies by revenue over the weekend (where btw I was today-years-old when I found out Foxconn started out making knobs for changing the channel on tv's back in the 70's!).
And well as you do I ended up down a rabbit hole looking through a list of Tech Cos deemd by the Fortune editorial panel of having the most IMPACT on China's economy.
What was really interesting about the list (deferring my bias towards green tech) was that there was not only a "smart" everthing (ie: digital, IOT, 5.5G ready), but that there was also a spread across China's tech & industrial bases - meaning not all from Beijing, Shanghai & Shenzhen. Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shaanxi, Hunan, Shandong all getting some viz.

CarbonStop - 碳阻迹（北京）科技有限公司
One of the heroes of the China Tech scene after 10 years in the Carbon game Carbonstop .

My old friends at Orca (another TusStar investee Co. out of Xi'an Science & Tech Park, Shaanxi) persevered through COVID to grow their autonomous electric aquatic waste management solutions not only in the domestic China market, but are now seeing a growing international client base, inc. Singapore, Hong Kong, Spain, Saudi Arabia.
Another Tsinghua alumni, (trend here), AI, ML, big data and cloud tech feature prominently in their origin story. However, as China's commitment to cleaning up its waterways continues and the new mega circular economy (recycling) industry grows, the cost benefits of autonomous remote waste management has begun to prove itself.
With solutions for surface plastic and different types of biomass removal, Orca also expanded to include leisure craft products as well.
And naturally, cleaner waters proves a bonus for green tourism.
SmartMore Group - 思谋集团 (Digital Factories)
In what is probably a picture-book case study for China's Science & Tech industry development strategy involving Hong Kong (post 2019), Simore/ SmartMore Corporation is a new generation of visual AI tech company dedicated to the fields of smart manufacturing and ultra-high-definition video. Smart has settled in the Hong Kong Science Park. A participant in HKSP Technology Entrepreneurship Incubation Program (Incu-Tech) and the Leap Enterprise Appreciation Program (LEAP).
At the same time the company also recruited local interns through the "Innovation and Technology Internship Program" with Kong Kong Government supporting short-term internships for students studying STEM, provide a monthly allowance of HK$10,500.
China's "Shenzhen New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Action Plan (2019-2023)" supported the development of the artificial intelligence industry working with industry. The traditional manufacturing industry in the Greater Bay Area is huge and is rapidly transforming to smart, green (high-quality) manufacturing.
Focussing on smart manufacturing and high-definition video their computer vision, their R&D team (300+) has developed a new generation of visual AI technology system architecture (SMore, ViMo) which integrate OCR character recognition, detection, classification and segmentation. It can independently train AI algorithms for scenarios such as material tracking, defect location, workpiece counting, and multi-classification appearance defect detection on production lines for customers in high-end consumer electronics, new energy & automotive.
BoonRay (SmartMines) - 上海伯镭智能科技有限公司
Who doesn't want to see a smart, low-carbon mine?
Bolay Technology (Shanghai) is supporting the high-quality transition of the mining industry with autonomous driving and AI-related technologies. Developing on L4 autonomous driving full-stack technology Bolei (there seems to be all sorts of versions of English name, sorry) have created an open-pit mine intelligent operation platform that includes autonomous driving systems, vehicle control system, 5G remote control system and a cloud-based intelligent dispatching system. This delivers clustered intelligent operation of various types of mining engineering machinery such as mine cars, excavators and loaders.
Currently working with State Power Investment Corporation, and equipment manufacturer the TONLY, along with Australia's own Rio Tinto, to implement the industry's first autonomous driving battery-swapping mining truck in a Mongolian Copper Mine.
