Look Up and See What You're Missing!

If you’re like me, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of daily tasks and challenges. The entrepreneurial journey is rarely a straight path; it's often filled with unexpected obstacles (and opportunities) that require anticipation and adaptability. But if you want to succeed, it’s crucial to take off your blinders and look beyond what's right in front of you.

Think of it like driving: if you only focus on the stretch of road directly in front of you, you'll likely miss the upcoming curves and potential hazards. The moment you become complacent and see only the wide-open road in front of you is when you will have a hawk come crashing through your windshield! (yes, that happened, a story for another day!)

The same principle applies to business. By looking farther ahead and anticipating changes in the market, consumer behavior, or technology, you can prepare and adjust your strategy accordingly.

This proactive approach allows you to navigate challenges more effectively and seize opportunities before your competitors, staying ahead of the game and avoid being blindsided. It’s easier to prevent fires than having to put them out once they’re blazing hot!

But it’s not just about looking forward. Sometimes, we get so bogged down with the minutiae—constantly looking down to check our phones or fixating on the next small step—that we forget to lift our heads and see the bigger picture.

Imagine walking down a street while only staring at your feet. Sure, you won't trip, but you’ll miss out on everything happening around you.

When I’m taking a walk here in NYC, I often raise my gaze to see what's happening on the second or third floor of a building, or if I’m out in the woods, I try to look higher into a tree or a hillside, giving me a broader perspective.

As an entrepreneur, this broader view can reveal trends, opportunities, and potential threats that aren't immediately obvious. It's about understanding the broader landscape in which your business operates.

Looking up at a higher angle offers a unique vantage point, providing insights that can shape your business strategy. It helps you spot opportunities you might have overlooked, like a potential partnership or a new market trend. It also helps you anticipate challenges before they become crises.

By balancing a forward-looking approach with an awareness of your immediate surroundings, you can create a more resilient and adaptable business.

The next time you find yourself buried in tasks, take a moment to look up. Observe what’s happening around you and ahead of you. It’s amazing what a little perspective can do for your business.

Not only will you experience greater wonder at what was previously out of your sight, but you will see your business and career elevate to a much higher level!

Combining my passion for sports and a desire to help others succeed, I founded Win Again, where current and former athletes can discover their identity beyond sports, develop the structure needed to succeed again, and receive the tips, strategies and actionable advice that allows them to WIN AGAIN and be elite in their next great career.

Over the past 20+ years as a business advisor and career coach, I have guided athletes and executives, holding them accountable during their transition.
