A love letter to San Francisco: The city that shaped my career
Dear San Francisco,
You changed me forever.
In 2003, I arrived at your doorstep from Trappes, carrying the weight of uncertainty, depression, and the remnants of a painful breakup. I felt the sting of closed doors and unkind words. I was a self-taught woman, searching for my place in the world, battling the odds that seemed stacked against me.
But in your embrace, I found myself. Your vibrant streets, innovative spirit, and diverse community breathed new life into me. The mix of people I met along the way opened my eyes to new perspectives and opportunities. You opened doors I never knew existed and guided me toward an industry that ignited my passion.
I discovered animation, an industry where creativity and storytelling come to life. It was in San Francisco that I began to build the foundation of my career, turning my dreams into reality. As an intern, my mentors treated me like a colleague, always encouraging and supporting me. Their positivity and belief in me helped me discover my ease in pitching, connecting with people, and speaking fluent English.
From San Francisco, I explored LA, New York, and Miami, each city radiating its own unique positive energy. These experiences, the people, and the opportunities you offered were instrumental in shaping who I am today.
I was born in 1976, but in 2003, thanks to you, I was born professionally. You helped me discover my true potential and laid the groundwork for the path I continue to walk.
As the saying goes, “You never come back quite the same from San Francisco.”
And it’s true. You made me who I am today, and for that, I am forever grateful.
Thinking of you today, especially after recently reuniting in Paris with a friend I made in San Francisco.
To anyone facing uncertainty or feeling lost, I say: embrace the journey, trust in the process, and remember that sometimes, the places we least expect hold the keys to our greatest transformations.
With all my heart,
Mounia Aram
So happy to have met you during that period! I too was shaped by my time in San Francisco, and the many people who became a part of my life as a result.
