Low Shedding Dog Breeds

Low Shedding Dog Breeds

Dogs are often beloved and sought out to be a companion and eventually a family member. There are many positive attributes to being a dog owner, but there is one not-so-pleasant trait that comes along with it. That would be dog hair. Cleaning an ample amount of dog hair regularly can be a headache, and pain, especially for those that suffer from allergies. Alas! There is another option to this furry problem without having to say goodbye to your pet-owning dreams.

Suppose you aim to find a small breed that does not shed, a dog who is not a shedding machine. We have compiled a list of low-shedding dogs that will hopefully help those looking for a little more dog but a little less fur!

Small Dog Breeds That Don’t Shed

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that smaller pups will tend to shed less than big puffy ones. We compiled a list of dogs that are not only petite in size but don’t cause tumbleweeds when they stroll by.

Basenji

The typical hound is a shedding machine, but not this one! A Basenji is a hound but is unique in its own way. Its compact size compared to its relatives comes with the perks of short hair that tend to stay attached to their body! This is good news for the pet owner that needs a low shedding dog.

The Basenji not only has minimal shedding, but they also need minimal maintenance. Nothing more than the occasional brushing will suffice for these loving pups. Basenji’s are intelligent and are known for their quiet demeanor, making them a perfect fit for an apartment dweller

Havanese

One might look at this tiny pup and see their long hair as an obvious shedding hazard, but that is simply not the case! Havanese might be small in size, but their personality has some grit! Luckily for those looking for a high-energy breed without spending their time picking hair off their furniture, the Havanese is a great fit. As stated, their fur is longer, so regular bathing and brushing are essential to keep their coat healthy.

Brussels Griffon

Are you a homebody and prefer your home to be fur-free? Then a Brussels Griffon might be the dog for you. These low shedding pups tend to be low maintenance in their pampering and exercise.

Their tiny size results in them tiring quickly, so there is no need for long, winded hikes; playtime indoors or a quick walk around the block is enough. Regular grooming is enough to keep a Brussel Griffon looking in tip-top shape!

Maltese

The sight of a Maltese only exudes elegance; their long, snow-white coat is the reason for that. Maltese have been around for some time now, and there is no surprise why they are so popular and loved. Their long white coat stays intact, which is excellent for this lap dog.

There is nothing worse than when your pup jumps down off your lap, and you are left with their hair all over you! Their coat is silky, which can mat easily, so they require higher maintenance when brushing, so keep that in mind when choosing a Maltese.

Best Dogs for Allergies

It is unfortunate for dog lovers to have bad allergies to deter them from becoming pet owners. We are happy to report that that doesn’t have to be the case! We have compiled a list of allergy-free dogs that would be an excellent fit for a home with sensitive noses!

Bichon Frise

These cutesy-looking, curly white-haired dogs will put a smile on your face. They are not only loving, playful and adorable pups, but they are also the perfect companion for those with allergies. Their smooth coat is soft to the touch and requires regular maintenance. The Bichon Frise’s coat grows continuously, so there is no room for skimping on their grooming to keep them looking clean and sharp.

Poodle

When it comes to hypoallergenic, the Poodle is an excellent choice. Despite the Poodle’s athletic nature, their hair stays intact. This is good news for those who can’t handle the shedding of hair. Despite the good news, their coat comes with a lot of maintenance to consider. Grooming must be done regularly for this proud and intelligent breed.

Yorkshire Terrier

Don’t let their teeny tiny size fool you. What the Yorkshire Terrier lacks in size, they make up in personality. There is no calm demeanor when it comes to the Yorkshire Terrier, which is great so that when they are bouncing around, there is no hair flying everywhere! They are full-on with joy and affection. A Yorkshire Terrier has a thin coat that is not only beautiful but extremely close to not shedding at all. This is good news for those with allergies. Regular brushing and bathing are advised for these little balls of energy.

Conclusion

There is always a dog breed that will fit somebody’s needs, even someone who prefers not to have dog hair all over their house or allergic to dog hair in general. The different breeds that we provided are only a select few we chose; many more fit the low shedding or allergy-friendly category. Just with anything else, make sure you take your time and research so you can find the right fit for you and your family!
