LPSN - List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature

What kind of data does this resource provide ?

The List of Prokaryotic Names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN) provides comprehensive information on prokaryotic nomenclature and related data. Updated weekly, LPSN provides data on names, nomenclatural types, taxonomic and nomenclatural status, synonymy, etymology, literature, strains, 16S rRNA gene and genome sequences, and a wealth of background information.

Give me an example of the impact of this resource

LPSN accelerates and facilitates science by providing free access to names of microorganisms in strict observance of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (ICNP), the sole internationally recognised standard for the nomenclature of archaea and bacteria. It is an authoritative source for scientific names of prokaryotes and provides accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date information on the nomenclature of these microorganisms and associated information, and is used extensively by individual researchers, companies, hospitals, universities and other institutions. LPSN provides fast access for everyone to original literature sources, synonyms, INSDC accession numbers, sequences of type-strain 16S rRNA gene sequences, culture collection catalogue entries, and links to entries in related databases (such as BacDive and TYGS). In that manner, LPSN promotes reuse of data and software.

LPSN puts the shown information into the context of nomenclatural regulations and provides fast access to explanatory data. By implementing the ICNP in an easily accessible way, LPSN assists in setting nomenclatural standards. This includes the nomenclatural status of names of prokaryotes as well as their accurate spelling. Since comprehensive information on taxon names can be bulk downloaded from LPSN and imported into other databases, LPSN also accelerates the work of other data resources in biology, medicine and bioinformatics. In that manner, LPSN also extends technical products in other areas, such as identification tools and other services for medical and industrial microbiology provided by companies. Incorporation of LPSN data thus facilitates scientific methodologies.

Key Facts

  • LPSN is a free to use service founded by a single microbiologist, Jean P. Euzéby, in 1997 originally as a manually curated database.
  • Today LPSN is managed by the Leibniz Institute DSMZ, Germany.  After moving to DSMZ,  LPSN was relaunched in 2020 based on a dedicated database infrastructure, including automated data import routines, a database-driven user-friendly website and an application programming interface (API).
  • LPSN is the only database supported by the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes (ICSP), the committee officially responsible for the regulation of prokaryotic nomenclature via the ICNP.
