lululemon Surge Jogger Review: Beyond the Run

lululemon Surge Jogger Review: Beyond the Run

★★★★☆ (4 out of 5 stars)

As a husband, father, and employee at lululemon, I'm always striving for personal and professional growth. Part of that journey involves intentionally choosing a healthier, more active lifestyle. And finding comfortable, versatile clothing that can keep up with my busy schedule is essential. That's where the lululemon Surge Jogger comes in. Designed for both running and training, these lightweight joggers have quickly become my go-to for everything from gym sessions and runs to weekend errands and even work.

lululemon describes the Surge Jogger as a streamlined, high-performance pant perfect for runners who want a "barely there" feel. And many lululemon enthusiasts echo this sentiment, praising the jogger's lightweight fabric, comfortable fit, and practical features. My own experience certainly aligns with this. From the moment I first tried on a pair, I was hooked. The Surge Jogger has become my favorite pant, surpassing even the newer Pace Breaker Jogger in my book (and in the opinion of many of my colleagues at lululemon Market Mall!). I loved them so much that I quickly acquired every color available.

Why lululemon Made the Surge Jogger:

lululemon designed the Surge Jogger with runners and high-performance athletes in mind. They wanted to create a lightweight, streamlined pant that felt barely there while still providing essential features and support. The combination of sweat-wicking fabric, four-way stretch, and a tapered fit ensures optimal comfort and freedom of movement during runs and training sessions. The zippered cuffs offer added convenience for quick changes, and the secure back pocket keeps essentials safe. Whether you're hitting the pavement or tackling a tough workout, the Surge Jogger is built to help you perform at your best.

Performance and Features:

The Surge Jogger truly excels when it comes to performance. The lightweight fabric, a blend of nylon and Lycra® elastane, feels almost weightless, allowing for unrestricted movement and a barely-there sensation. This fabric blend not only provides four-way stretch and shape retention but also offers excellent breathability and moisture-wicking capabilities, keeping you cool and dry during intense workouts.

I recently wore these joggers for a particularly grueling HIIT workout that involved a lot of burpees, box jumps, and sprints. Even with all that dynamic movement, the joggers stayed comfortably in place and didn't restrict my range of motion at all. The sweat-wicking properties were also put to the test, and they passed with flying colors, keeping me feeling dry and comfortable throughout the entire workout.

The zippered cuffs are a game-changer, providing easy on-and-off functionality for warm-ups and cool-downs or even for quick changes when transitioning from the gym to running errands. I also appreciate the secure zipperless back pocket, which is perfect for storing my phone and keys while on the go. And for those early morning or evening runs, the reflective details provide added visibility and peace of mind.

Fit and Comfort:

The Surge Jogger features a classic tapered fit that strikes the perfect balance between comfort and style. It provides ample room in the glutes and thighs while tapering down towards the hem for a streamlined look that's flattering on a variety of body types. The four-way stretch fabric and added Lycra® fiber ensure exceptional flexibility and shape retention, so you can move freely and confidently without feeling restricted. As someone with a 32" inseam, I find the length to be just right, hitting just above the ankle as intended.

What surprised me most about the Surge Jogger is how versatile they are. I've worn them for everything from running and training to lounging at home and even running errands around town. They're so comfortable that I sometimes forget I'm even wearing them! I even wore them on a recent flight, and they were perfect for travel, providing both comfort and style.

Durability and Care:

The Surge Jogger appears to be well-constructed with durable materials. After several washes, they still look and feel brand new. The color hasn't faded, and the fabric hasn't pilled or shown any signs of wear and tear. lululemon recommends washing them with like colors on a cold, gentle cycle and tumble drying low. Following these care instructions should help maintain the jogger's quality and longevity.

Comparisons:

While I haven't personally tried a wide range of running joggers, my colleagues and I generally prefer the Surge Jogger over the newer Pace Breaker Jogger. Many online reviewers also express a similar sentiment, praising the Surge Jogger's superior comfort and versatility. Some reviewers even suggest that the Surge Jogger rivals more expensive options from brands like Nike and Adidas.

Pros:

  • Lightweight and breathable fabric with four-way stretch
  • Sweat-wicking and quick-drying
  • Zippered cuffs for easy on and off
  • Secure zipperless back pocket
  • Reflective details for visibility
  • Comfortable and flattering fit
  • Versatile for running, training, and everyday wear

Cons:

  • Limited color options
  • Some reviewers find the waistband to be slightly snug (consider sizing up if you prefer a more relaxed fit)

Wishlist for the Future:

  • Expand the color palette to offer more variety
  • Explore incorporating even more sustainable materials

Conclusion:

The lululemon Surge Jogger is a fantastic choice for runners and anyone seeking a comfortable, versatile, and high-performing pant. It excels in comfort, functionality, and style. If you're looking for a jogger that can keep up with your active lifestyle, I highly recommend giving the Surge Jogger a try.
