• The most popular activities over the holiday period were (in order): Self driving, camping, hot springs, fishing, diving, rafting, hiking, cycling, surfing, and “exploration”. Those activities listed in bold saw the biggest increase in popularity this year. The report also noted a trend of picnicking as part of the camping experience.
• The top attraction in the country was Universal Resort Beijing. Shanghai Disneyland also came in no. 12 on the top 20 list of attractions, but all of the other attractions were nature-focused – mostly mountains and islands.
• The report says that 38% of National Day holiday travelers were male, and 62% were female. As in other reports from Mafengwo, this at least partly reflects the fact that more women than men use the platform. The report also says that 48% of Golden Week travelers were born in the 1990s and 2000s – this does show that a growing cohort of Gen-Z travelers is now using Mafengwo. Travelers born in the 1980s were still the largest group by decade of birth.
• With more people staying locally in 2021, Golden Week trips were shorter this year than last. Around 60% traveled together with family or friends, but more than one-fifth traveled solo.
• The top keywords on Mafengwo during Golden Week were: National Day small group travel, western Sichuan short circular route, hot springs, Universal Resort Beijing tickets, camping, Chengdu local area, Beijing local area, Xinjiang self driving, guesthouse, and south Gansu self driving.
